bottle heater/rear defroster mod??
ok, so my nitrous kit is almost ready to use. a fellow fbody owner suggested for me to wire the bottle heater to the rear defroster for ease of wiring and switch use. has anyone else done this? wanted to know if its a good or bad idea and where to wire it...

this used to be a popular way to control the heater a long time ago. I hooked up a wire from the terminal in the spade connector on the rear window. That went to a relay to control the on/off. The other side of the relay went from the positve terminal up front (fused) to the back where the heater was and then to greound. Then you can just hit the defroster button and it will heat the bottle as long as the defroster light is on. It works...but you have to keep hitting the damn button when is cold. But on a day when you dont need much it also keeps you from forgetting to turn it off.
Dont try to hook the defroster wires directly to the heater element. It will draw too much current. If i rememebr right it will power a bottle heat from those terminal as long as the defroster element is unplugged. IOW...one or the other and it will work....but not both at once.

it is on a resseting breaker if it draws too much and over heats it will not work for some time until it cools. But under normal operation its on a timer. If you use a relay in the system and only use the defroster power to control the relay it works just fine.

The defroster wires are amp & TIME controlled. You can use the defroster to control a RELAY. But you must have the relay(LOW AMPERAGE DRAW) Then the next problem is the timer you need to bypass that. Grab the wires (TAP INTO) the wires as they pass the passenger side door kick panel.

i use the rear defroster method. pretty good. only drawback is the key has to be on. that and bottle heater doesn't get as hot unless the motor is running. that way it's using the alternator for more voltage. just a battery draw isn't enough.
