Are ngk's gapped right.......

Are NGK tr6's gapped correctly from the factory or do I need to check them before I put them in.

30thz Mar 5, 2006 07:49 PM

Check them. I check all my plugs.

383LQ4SS Mar 5, 2006 08:02 PM

yep..check em. Everyonce in a while youll get one thats closed. Sometimes for the Tr6's if im running a small shot I will eyeball them..lol...just to ensure they arent closed.

ws6nick Mar 5, 2006 08:27 PM

Yeah, I figured. Gap should be at .060 right?

1MEANGTO Mar 5, 2006 08:44 PM

I also check them all .055 is what I'm at.

Doh .035 is what I'm at guess my finger got lazy. I had them at 28 but regapped at the dyno last time there. I had a miss ended up being a crappy wire.

iamsickofitall Mar 5, 2006 08:53 PM

you're gapping tr6's that wide???

WERD. Most people with tr6's gap them from .032-.040 since most tr6 users are running FI or N20. If you are doing either, close in that gap.

383LQ4SS Mar 5, 2006 09:03 PM

Im pretty sure TR6s are gapped at .038
Dont open them up much past that.

Ben R Mar 5, 2006 09:04 PM

I don't know why you guys don't run your gaps closer to .040. The smaller the gap the easier it is for the spark to jump the electrode. As cylinder pressure increases it becomes even tougher, and with the LS1's crappy COP ignition system it's imperative to keep your plugs gapped close. You could even run as close as .025 on the big HP stuff to make it that much more reliable and consistant.

I totaly agree someone comes into the Nitrous Forum , I'm guessing they
are spraying and need to adjust the GAP as needed espically TR6s
Hawk

I havent ever had to run the gaps closer than .028 yet up to about 875 rwhp.

Guys...as Ben said...gap is a function of cylinder pressure and the amount of mass in the cylinder prior to spark. The more of that stuff you have the more power youll make. A 400 hp H&C car with 11 to 1 compression could run .045-.55 gap. Same car with a 150 shot will probably want a .032-.038. And a 300 shot maybe like .025-.030.

The only negative effect from too small a gap I have noticed was a slightly rougher idle at times.

The are supposed to be pre-gapped but I also always check them. I had mine gapped at .038

ws6nick Mar 5, 2006 09:24 PM

Then .032-.038 it is.
Thanks

Speaking of wires, we saw a 20RWHP loss using Taylor wires when compared to MSD's on Mr. Powells car. Very odd, but it checked out using the ABA method.

1MEANGTO Mar 5, 2006 09:47 PM

I had Taylers on my car at the time of the dyno pulls switched them to the cranes thats what my tuner had laying around.

Z284U2TRY Mar 6, 2006 08:43 AM

i use the taylor wire on my car now seems ok didn't notice any big changes in idle or accel from a stock wire. What is the aba method?

iMpoSStoR Mar 10, 2006 11:17 PM

All Tr6's Are Pre-gapped At .030.. I Always Leave Install Them The Way Them Come I Just Take A Look To See If It Is Completely Closed Or Not.. But Have Never Ran Into A Closed Plug That Is Why They Have The Protective Cardboard Piece At The Bottom.. Also For Nitrous You Might Want To Try The Iridiums... Work Awesome And Last Longer.. A Little Pricey Though..

SDB Mar 11, 2006 04:08 AM

I have bought many sets of NGK TR6 plugs...all were right round .038, never as close at .030...I gap mine at ,.035 for 150-200 shot.

98redorangeta Mar 11, 2006 10:14 AM

My tr-6s came in at abot .035 so i just left them there but i would check anyway.
