Big stall + spray=spinning too many RPM's?

Just wanted to get some input on some guys running a big stall and adding the juice on top of it. I would like to spray about 30 ft out after launching, but am wondering if i should wait till second gear to engage the spray. I am running a Yank 4200, and running the car NA the stall flashes my rpms up in the 5500 to 6k range at all times. Is running spray gonna maybe put me over the limit for my motor since it will be spinning another 100hp on top of whats its already got??? any help is appreciated, just trying to get a taste of what i am in for.

Its going to push the converter alot harder. 5500 stall seems like alot for a 11.7 car.

Get it tightened up the spray then shit out of it. :)

Who ?

tru2gm bc the specs on his cam will tell what size stall he really needs bc he may be over stalling his cam and flying right threw his powerband.

4000 stall, stock motor, 100 shot and 150 shot.
Only thing is on the 150 shot I hit teh rev limiter on the 1-2 shift. Just have to raise my shift points a bit and that should solve that problem.

Man... Thats alot of convertor. I would have it tightened up.

Its the F14 232/234/598 lift, and i believe 114lsa

And when you guys say get the stall tightend up are you saying buy a smaller one? I have a buddy that ran a 4k stall with a 100 shot and he was running 10.5's with it all day... appreciate the input so far keep it coming

Its not a 5500 stall, the stall is a 4200, im saying when i get in the throttle the convertor flashes and stays up in the range of 5500 to 6k thru the shifts never really drops down below 5k it seems. Thats why im wondering with spraying another 100 on top of what im pushing might spin a rod bearing or something.

bjamick Jan 23, 2007 03:13 PM

At 5000 rpm the motor really isn't straining any its when it gets above 6600 rpm is when it starts straining. ~Cough- Rod Bolts- Cough~. Is your TC made to handle nitrous?? Like anti ballooning plate or anything? If not your TC will be screwed up after a few passes on the bottle im sure. Personally i think you need to get a 3200 or even maybe a 3500 stall, if you do that i believe that your times will prob drop. JMO

I think a converter this small would not be very ideal for his setup, i think the converter has to be tightened up and spray it out of the hole, jmo, my cam is a 228 232 stock bottem end very similar setup :)

My converter is not a "nitrous converter" and I've hit it with TONS of nitrous passes. It was in a 10 sec T/A before I got it and hit it with TONS of nitrous passes. Yank FTW!!

I think i am just gonna call the guys up at yank tomorrow and see what they think

Well i don't know how you managed to do that and not tear it up. Do you spray out of the hole?

The tail of the tape on blowing through a converter on juice is when your shift extension just about disapears, Let me explain. When you shift now at say 6500 and the rpm drop down to say 5500 the difference between the high (6500) and what the rpm comes down to, the low (5500) is the shift extension 1000 rpm in this case. Now what happens when you spray this same setup. The shifts tend to go a little higher then the set shift rpm (wich is why some hit rev limiter after adding spray) and the low comes up 300-500. So your shifting at 6500 now it only drops to 5800 to 6000, no problems here. When the converters to loose you might only see a 300 rpm shift extension and a reduced efficiancy. If you want a resonable guess on if your converter is to tight I would need to know what your shift extension is as logged with EFI or HTP and how big of a shot you are looking at running.

Is there another way? lol
Yes, I spray out of the hole. 1.49 60' on stock suspension, I mean, the way it left the factory. stock 10 bolt with 3.23 gears, stock tranny (other than the tq converter)

Bingo!

That's exactly what I need to do. Data log the car to see what's actually happening on the shifts.

Just because Yank says its a 4200 doesnt mean its a 4200. If it flashes to 5500 and the shift ext. is 5500 then its a 5500 stall.

Also the stall speed is dependant on HP .... your 4200 stall (5500) would stall higher in my car because it makes more power.

It may have been a 4200 stall for a SI car not a H/C.

Get it tightened up and you'll be fine. :drive: :)
