Default 'Side' project cars? Who else is...

tinkering around with a "side" project car? I know Poik posted something about a volvo and maybe someone else? What are you planning to do with them? Possible part swapping here and there?

I'm getting stuck in this mindset that my son's 1990 Geo Storm sittin in the driveway is better stripped then stuffing a SB 390 (if it will fit) in it for slips only. Had no idea its got an inline V4 until I popped the hood - no problem getting rid of the fwd since it will be completely rebuilt..to what end I'm not sure.

Its just twisted enough to do. Why be normal?

I had a geo storm. The problem with that setup is radioator will have to be moved forward about 4 inches. for fan clearance and the upper part of the back of the firewall needs 6 inches of extra clearance ..for the valve covers.
The tranny needs 1-2 inches of clearance in the back....Sorry more bummer news only a ford 9"will weld in without a real issue. driveline will have to be custom made 36-42 " in length

I looked into this when i wanted to put a 350 old style in my 93 geo storm with a turbo 400. For a 90 storm i may be all wrong but that was my findings.
Grab a tape a start measuring stuff out.is my best advice.....

My other car is a '95 Grand Am. My current project is trying to figure out a way to get rid of it and into something a bit nicer while making it plausible to my wife

Yeah the Volvo that I am getting is going to be my side project. I did not get it this weekend as was planned because the guy had to go to Portland because his fiance's grandpa died. Hopefully I will be able to pick it up this coming weekend . My initial plans for it:

New hood
Ford PowerStroke intercooler
MegaSquirt'n Spark engine management
Exhaust from turbo
Boost controller

That will be well under $1k right there and should make it possible for ~12-15psi, hopefully around 200rwhp/240rwtq. So with a total of $1300 invested, I think this car should run mid-high 14s.

Then a little further down the road I want to get a Volvo "K" cam or something similar, not even sure if Comp or Crane makes Volvo cams so I'm not sure about a custom cam. Mustang T5 transmission swap. Maybe stronger rearend swap. Water/methanol injection. Also I want to upgrade the turbo to run about 18psi. That should then put me at ~250rwhp/300rwtq, with less than $3000 "invested." And at 3000lbs with full interior, I think that should break into 13s.. And I think that would be cool to have as my daily get around car.

Just getting back to my Swedish roots.. haha

I'm currently in the planning stages of building another air-cooled Beetle. Shooting for something that will run at least low 12's on the strip, I'm actually going to try for 11's, but we'll see how it goes.

Will probably buy the car mid-late summer.

I have a 67 Mustang coupe that I've had since I was 16 (first car) and in need of restoration. Just don't have the money to work both.

I race my little 93 Mustang coupe. 302/328 rw with 98 Explorer heads, a 218/224 112 Comp cam, headers, Cobra intake, etc.

Stock longblock, it ran a 12.91... with the cobra intake, 12.73. That was with 251rwhp... so with 300 Im thinking 11.99 is a great goal.

Its still a rattling, creaking, uncomfortable, barely handling, but good looking Fox body though that came from the factory with an 8.8, a 4-link suspension, and was easily lightened to about 2800 lbs.

And that whole Volvo souping-up thing? Yeah.... been there.

Have fun with that

I still have my 13.9 @ 103 S70 T5... but with a elusive vacuum leak, its not in the mood to run that again these days. Ive owned... 5? 245ti's... 81-83. Never felt like I was able to make any of them quick enough to compete with a little stock Fox body coupe.

I want to do a cold air intakes, cat-back, and HP Tuner mod to the GTO to make it run mid 13s, but the wife is more than a little leary of me messing with another one of her cars. She sees what I did to "her" Trans Am.....

I don't have another car yet except for the wife's '05 CR-V. I do plan on getting something else though in the next 1-2 years.

I'd like to get a pickup with decent size (Silverado HD, Avalanche, etc) but if gas continues the way it is, I'll probably just go with something fuel efficient... Solstice or Sky is what I'm thinking if that's the case.

You have given her reason for as fast as your car is I though it had great around town manners.

I'm putting Lucas P.O.D. (prince of darkness ) Fuel injectors in my '91 Dodge diesel today, followed by a 16cm2 exhaust housing on the turbo, and shortly will be doing the exhaust, which will be 4" from turbo to the 5" stacks coming out front of bed...hee hee

I've got a 67 Chevelle I've had a hard time spending money on after I bought my Formula a year and a half ago. I was spending about 2-4K on it every year until Sept of '03.

It was running 12.80's with 4.88's in the rear. Heavy as hell. It's probably gonna need new valve springs before I attempt to fire it up again. It's been sitting too long on those doubles for my solid cam. And I need to pull the tranny back and re-seat the stall converter. Gotta remove the exhaust and loosen up all the header bolts in the heads about halfway to get the headers to swing outward. No small task in my cramped single car garage. So it sits for now until I get motivation to work on it.

This will give you an idea of what I'm looking to do..

http://www.oceanstreetvideo.com/download1.html

Check out the first car, the blue one doing the wheel stand... 11.5's, and it's still street drivable. Probably the most insane 11.5 pass you'd ever run.
