Default Anybody have any boat knowledge?

Well 2 different things....

1. I have a 1984 Seaswirl runabout that I built a 4.3 for last summer. Well like 3 weeks ago the outdrive went out on me. The outdrive has a lower and upper portion. In gear if I spin the prop by hand I can hear a 'clunking' noise in the lower portion of the upper (just above where the upper/lower bolt together). I guess I will start by just trying to remove the lower portion. Any ideas??

2. In searching for parts I found another boat. 87 Seaswirl Spyder tournament ski boat. Motor is bad but everything else is great. Has a 351 Cleveland with direct drive in it but was wondering if it would be regular or reverse rotation. I'm thinking I could just get another running motor somewhere for cheap to get by for now...

Thanks,
Jason

Now THAT'S Chebby thinking, outdrive blows, and it's the Ford engine's fault.

I'll try to add a little insight to this, maybe. What kind of outdrive is it? What do you mean by it went out? In gear it'll rotate in the direction it's supposed to, and clunk while doing that, but not go in the opposite direction, right? It is normal for it to clunk. Just the gears doing their thing. Mine does the same. In neutral is it fine? In gear, if it rotates the opposite direction, that's bad. Guess I need a little more info here. Lemme know, I'll try to help what I can. Good luck,

Brian

Silverbullet02, the outdrive is an OMC (400 I think) mechanical shift. The original motor would have been a 3.8 V6. With the motor running if I put it in gear the prop doesn't spin. It make a 'whining' noise. So with the motor off I put it into gear and spun the prop by hand and can hear the broken **** inside. I undid the bolts shown in the drawing below but can't get the units to seperate. Hell, I can't even get it to crack loose where they meet!
And no it is not an OMC Cobara unit, just found that pic.

You are asking me to remember some really old **** here... its been about 15 years since working on outboards and we never did do much with Fords. Either way you will have to crack the housing to get to the gear shaft and will find those little itty bitty pieces of metal floating around. It will be fun!
not

As referenced in the pic, how do I crack it loose w/o hurting anything?

hookay....is it a weld aftermarket or bolt factory? Depending on the year some Chev's were bolted up for easier access. If not you do have to take it apart from the 'top' down and dissasemble the prop, prop shaft and gears. As pointed out the first clunk sound is normal, your prop not turning when you have it in gear is not.

and please tell me you have it mounted in a barrel of water while doing this....

In MY experiance they are ten times more expensive then cars and you need water to use them and get traction. Can't get me to work unless I put a lake in between Work and I.

Over all they are like a huge firey pit you throw money in to put the fire out

I'm still in a profit situation on this boat. Got $3K in it and now will have up to $500? in parts. Boat is worth ~$5K. And the couple nights of skinny dipping and many days of wakeboarding with hot pieces of *** makes the horrble fuel economy well worth it!!

And the other boat, which I will probably buy tonight, it is worth about $7K-$9K once it has a running motor. Everything is good on the boat but the motor. I already found a fresh 351 Cleveland long block for $800. Just slap the marine pan, intake, exhaust, distributor on and I got a nice ski boat for around $2-$2.5K...
