I covered the opening to the oil pan with a rag to prevent anything from falling in.
Had to put it in with my body standing facing away from the motor. Reach down like you were picking up something on the ground slightly behind you so your cupping your hand backwards like a J and put the bolt up and in. Your facing away while your doing it. Its the only way I found that my hand and fingers would bend and conform to get it it.

That is the single worst thing to have to do on these engines. I found a ratchet wrench with tape over one end works about as good as anything. Provided the oil pump is lined up properly, you can even use that to install the F-ing bolt.
You do need to loosen all the pan bolts & drop the pan as far as possible. I hear some guys take the motor mount bolts out & raise the engine a couple inches. A pain for sure, but that would make it easier. Sorry, not much help.....

Thanks for the ideas, I thought about the ratching wrench with tape thing today at work. So I went to Sears and bought the wrench and I'll probably have time to try it tomorrow.

well today I got the bolt in, I tried the tape on the wrench thing but it didn't seem to work. What I ended up doing is taking a pair of needle nose pliers and holding it in place and starting the bolt with my right hand finger. I tightened the pan back up and oil pump as well. Just waiting on the spring tool from LSXChevelle.
