Painting my headers...

Got some Pacesetters from an old friend of mine for free so I decided to work some magic on them. Not trying to make them show quality really. Just want them to look nice.

Here's what I started with. They looked pretty rough. They were sitting for a year or so in a garage:

Took an angle grinder to them for a little bit and shot some primer on them. Planning on sanding them a little and then cleaning and prepping for the black. Here's what I have so far:

Going to probably shoot some paint this weekend if I'm free and feel like it lol. Let me know what ya guys think!

Make sure you get REALLY high temp paint.

I used VHT FlameProof that said it would work for up to 2000F but its come off in a few places.

It was pretty much worthless, I would just wrap mine now if I had a second chance and they weren't coated.

Word thanks for the advice. I got some high temp paint with ceramic and it says up to 500*F. If that doesn't work like I want it to then I'm just going to go ahead and wrap them anyways. I should have them painted this weekend. I was out there a little tonight grinding away but had to put the kiddie to bed. I'll be at it again tomorrow.

those were rusted, good luck to you, pic when painted please

Hell yeah they were. Nothing that a half hour with an angle grinder couldn't fix. I'll have them painted this weekend. I need to get some free time to prep the other one. Working like a slave ...but it's money so I can't complain.

I would've thrown on some BBQ grill coating. That hi temp paint always chips after awhile.

I've seen woodstove paint used with good results.

nice..wanna do mine..

Wow great job. How long did the grinding take you? Seems like in this situation the primer would also have to be rated for high temps seeing as it's actually on the metal. If the paint can hold up but not the primer then it will flake.

Yeah send me the headers and a little extra cash and I'll gladly do yours. :)

Thanks! The grinding took me about 30 to 45 minutes because I have extra OCD and shit lol. I wanted to make sure I got all the surface rust off of there. But yeah no big deal. I'm hoping they won't flake but if they do then by the time I get fed up with it I'll hopefully score some new headers.

Alright so I finished off the other header this afternoon and got around to shooting some primer. I wanted to sand them down some to get them a little smoother but I didn't have the right grit sand paper. I'm probably going to pick up some 1000-2000 grit tomorrow and do a little wet sanding after I lay down a second coat and let it dry. Anyways here are the pictures. First coat down.

Ready for some paint:

Gonna lay another coat down tonight.

ttranssam 05-30-2010 09:57 AM

...wrap it booooooy.

Tx98Formula 05-30-2010 12:47 PM

I just did mine this weekend, i went with a flat black though, the only reason i painted mine is because the previous owner had them painted ford blue... don't really understand that....

pillarpod 05-30-2010 05:03 PM

nice, now tell us how long the paint last :)

1badWS6 05-30-2010 09:28 PM

Will do! Lol...

Smit660 05-31-2010 07:20 PM

VHT is tge best high temp paint u can get and it still doesn't last. The only way to do it is powdercoat or wrap them.

1badWS6 05-31-2010 09:10 PM

Painting was the cheapest route and again I'm not looking for show quality/long lasting type shit. I don't drive the car ALL that much and if it gets THAT bad I'll just start saving for some new headers. I was trying to see the least amount I can spend on a header install without going with cheap ass parts. Just browsing the net for the best deals along with friends.
