Default 00 Z body rebuild thread

2000 Camaro, Got it in need of repair, as you can see in the pics. Damage is only cosmetic, the car is otherwise MINT with just 30,000 miles on the clock. LS1 powa, auto, 3.23 rear with black cloth.

I have virtually all the parts to finish the car, as they were included in the purchase.
A good 1/4 skin off a low milage v6 car
New glass SS style aftermarket hood
New front and rear bumper covers
New front fenders
The y2k C5 wheels (17x9, 18x10.5) they arent perfect but good enough
Tail panel and taillights off the same low milage v6 car

All i really need to buy is a radiator and some headlights, gonna get black projector/halos with HIDs, and a couple brackets on the front. It runs and drives fine, was checked out on a frame rack and no problems.

Heres me bringing it home, had to stop and wash the 4 years of dust off of it, it was wrecked in 2006 (I think) and hasnt moved since

Friday Dec 17th I started, took all the parts out and went through them, went over the front end and straightened what needed to be with a hammer and dolly. I think im going to cut the frame horns and just make light small tubular support as the one side is kinda jacked up. Then I put it back outside so we could use the shop over the holidays.

First mod i picked up cause it was cheap, a brand NIB PTC ls1 race converter, 4000 stall

Also purchased HPTuners , and a tinted Lexan rear window. Also will be switching to E85, going speed density, and adding Mac midlengths and ORY, with either a Magnaflow or I will make a 4" system for it

I have to say that the most difficult part of changing out the 1/4 panel was removing that ******* sail panel on the roof. I managed to get it off, had to buy some "specialty" tools that turned out to work pretty good. Did crack it in 2 spots but they will be a quick fix, nothing severe.

took me about 6 hours with a hammer and dolly to get the wheelwell into the shape i wanted it, the inner wheelhouse was caved in in the back, little work with a jack, hammer and dolly, and stud welder took care or it though!

Sanded down all my spotwelds and started to fit the new panel in place, Here it is hanging in place with a little fitting

spent the afternoon, got the 1/4 fitted about as good as i could have ever hoped. Its actually better than the other side. Just need to weld the rear vertical later this week and sand down all the welds, slap some seam sealer on then that project is done

Damn that car took a good hit but at least it's just cosmetic though. But I'm glad to see your bringing it back to life. At least its not going to the crusher. What have you got planned for the color?

Finished welding the 1/4 today, got the hatch fitting pretty good, and started working on the front. I think im gonna pick up new headlight brackets rather than try to straighten these ones. I need to find some pics of how the front goes back together its been a long time.
Also got the fenders rolled, BFH'd the inner wheelwell and put the 18s on the back

picked up my bumpers this weekend and got alot of it fitted. I have new headlight brackets and all new lights on the way as well. I wont be working on it for awhile as i have some other things to do but will start getting it ready for bodywork soon

And yes i hacked up my cheap Ebay SS hood, im personally not a fan of them so im going to make it like a mini sunoco hood, this is just a rough cut so far. Vents will have some mesh glassed into them

I'm sure you know the issue with the sail panel right and the glue GM used. Bubbling on the sail panels of 99-2002 if I'm not mistaking. 98 and under used different glue that didn't cause bubbling.

Thought I would point that out before you put your 2000 sail panel back on if you didn't know.

that's what I was going to do but ppl said it would still show with the bubbles popping out. mine isn't that bad so no big deal to me and your a body guy so your cool if you needed to swap it out down the road.

if i may ask a couple of questions here, why didnt you panle bond?? around the wheel house, lower part of the 1/4, and part of rear body panel, and panle bond inside the door jamb?? and by the rocker panle??

what about the front end, just by pics it looks like the frame rails and core support are twisted i could be wrong but it did look like the front end is twisted,

lastly why didnt you pre pull the metal before cutting everything off?? i dunno if your a tech or not but we always pre pull metal to relieve stress i would have pre pulled that 1/4, and pulled the outer wheel house along with the 1/4 on a frame rack so why didnt you pre pull??? 6 hours to fix a outer wheel house cmon now, if you pre pulled the 1/4 with the wheel house you would have been done in less time
so im just curious
