Cost of paint
I recently spoke with a couple paint shops in my local are about repainting my 2002 T/A. Both of my quotes ran to plus or minus $9,000.00. When questioning the cost I was told that materials alone would run in the $3.5000 to $$4,000 range. The reason I was given was that the EPA ruling on paint emissions. After checking on line paint suppliers I found that total supply cost shouldn't run more than $600 to $750. Is this a scam or what.

What color?
There is definitely different qualities of base coat, clear coats ect. Like my car is Cayenne Red Metallic. I would probably need 3 quarts for the base coat alone and my color for quality base is $500 per quart. So right off the bat there is $1500.

I paid 8k for mine. Didn't include engine pay or underside or inside the car. Full exterior, body parts were pulled sanded and painted. Fiberglass hood was prepped and sanded to smooth out ripples as best they could.

This may or may not help, but I just got my 2001 black Formula back from carstar last week. I paid $2,100 to get the back hatch, rear bumper cover, and one mirror repainted. I can easily see a complete repaint costing $9,000.

Had two cars painted in 2015. Majority of the cost was labor for both cars.
My white 91 RS cost $8,500, the paint work was outstanding and worth the cost. Car was taken apart (doors, hatch, hood, fenders, etc) stripped to metal, dents & issues fixed, primed w/black epoxy, painted (door jams etc) and wet sanded to near show car quality. Panel alignment addressed etc. Despite using a very high quality paint and materials the majority of the was LABOR.
My black 91 RS Convertible was painted about the same time estimate was $4,500. Very happy with result. Car wasn't taken apart to same degree hood was removed, primed & sanded, dents & issues fixed, primed, painted (not the door jams etc) and no wet sanding, very nice new car quality paint work. Panel alignment wasn't addressed other than hood and new door pins & bushings etc. Despite used a very high quality paint the majority of the cost was still LABOR.

Three years ago, I paid $3700 for a complete repaint of my 70 El Camino and this included a set of stencil painted hood stripes. Two important caveats here:
1 - I delivered the vehicle to the shop completely stripped of trim, bumpers, mirrors and glass - very easy to tape off and paint. The vehicle only needed minor blemish metal repair work after I dropped it off. I did all of the reassembly.
2 - I did this on paint booth "fill time" at a shop that mostly does insurance claim damage repairs. This meant that I waited for a time when their paint booth was not being used for repainting more profitable insurance job vehicles. However, I was lucky here and only waited three weeks for them to complete the job start to finish.
This was not done using cheap paint and thus far, the paint has held up well.
