looking for a particularly BAD ASS silver paint

ok so my '00 Trans Am is pretty much in need of a paint job. i don't plan on stripping the car so i want to stay with the silver/black i have going on now. in any case, since i plan on painting the car, i wanted to find a special silver, something that really stands out amongst a crowd. if you've ever wanted to see a certain silver on a T/A, here's your chance!

I had my silver 70 lemans painted and went with a merecedes color- it was nothing but clear and metalflake. The car is blindingly bright- looks similar to stainless

whitedevilWS6 04-28-2011 09:56 PM

sounds expensive. but i'm only concerned with how bad ass it looks. got any pics?

wish i could see it in person. as long as it doesn't look like a carnival ride i'd say it looks great. but it does really shine!

good question... the flake is really fine- does not have the bass boat look to it at all.

it shines much more than anticipated- if the sun is out it is hard to look at withough sunglasses on

good to hear man. if you have a paint code for me i'll definitely hold on to it.

Not sure if you are looking for a silver that is darker or lighter than stock, but how about an old school silver? This is Cortez silver, a late '60s/early '70s GM color. I also have a Sebring Silver Metallic '98 Z, so I can tell you first hand that in a side-by-side comparison this is a noticeably different shade. It's not as easy to tell in the pics, but Cortez is darker and shows a slight tint of blue in certain lighting. Here are pics in two different angles of light:

I will be at the body shop on sat and can get the code. I don't think it cost any more than regular base clear.

The ultimate silver...

Trust me bro. The studio photography ain't doin that paint job one shit bit of justice. read.

whitedevilWS6 04-29-2011 10:35 AM

it does look very nice. and i don't doubt that a more tasteful color will come from a german maker (not trying to diss american). is there some material to read that i missed?

Austin Auflick 04-29-2011 10:52 AM

Well yeah I didn't look at the article I posted so I don't know what it all details. I am however very familiar with the build. You can Google "iforged DL widebody" and see really what all went in to it. One of the highlights is the paint selection. Some articles state that it can not be bought or the paints a grand a quart etc. But the facts on this paint is that Mercedes uses it exclusively on concept vehicles only. As you can see with this car, it was build by iforged with no spares expense and went to SEMA.

Well, you are certainly entitled to your opinion.

I don’t really know how one shade of silver could be more “tasteful” than another though, since it’s a pretty mild color regardless of the shade. I guess this distinction might be possible for more vibrant colors, but either way it's all a matter of opinion.

My best suggestion is to get out to some car events and look at various shades in person. No matter the quality of photography, it's never the same as seeing it in person.

whitedevilWS6 04-29-2011 08:12 PM

what i really want is a color that gets that "DAAAAAMN" look when it sits in a parking lot or when driving by at night. sort of like how iridescent paints vary from really bright spots to really dark spots. of course i don't want a ricer iridescent paint, but you know what i mean.

but i do think i'll spend a good bit of time checking out car shows. and i'm not painting til i get my raptor hood. just would really like to get all this done before F-Body Beach Bash '11!

RPM and whitedevilws6: The aforementioned Iforged SL 500s silver "shadows" very hard. So basically under any contour or hard line, the color difference will vary MUCH more than a standard silver. That particular silver's shadow properties are so intensive that at night the car would appear to be "highlighted" in bright silver while the rest would literally fade into such a dark silver it would appear to be black. Just look how it shadows in a garage...

I really loved champagne. Hard to duplicate if you need body panel replacements but god damn does it look unique!
