hey guys im goin to be completly rebuilding my car and was wondering which clear coat use this time
ive been using ppg 2002 which really nice and want to see if theres a better clear and here is some pictures of the clear on the car now
where i work we use to spray PPG and we have had several comebacks from about 5 years ago that the clear has hazed over. we use R&M now. sooms to be great. But what my boss uses on his $40k-up resto muscle cars is Glasruit. its german, i believe we get it through our R&M paint rep.
this is the best clear i EVER used.its not yellowish looking like other cheap clears u see on the market.its gives really nice shine..thts wht i used on my car..here their website.its some italian company..http://www.betacolor.it/chi_siamo.ctr
Use the same brand Base coat as the clear. If you start mixing and match it may work but your more likely to run into problems later on.
RM is the entry line to Glasruit. It's a great product but if you really want to do a show car finish spend the extra coin on the Glasurit product. You will see the difference in the Clarity and the color on the base coat.
It used to be that the RM clear didn't have as much UV protection but was other was essentially the same product. I haven't messed with it lately.
FWIW the Trans Star is like a low end PPG line.
Same like Nasson is the low end Dupont Clear.
It Was/Is very common in the industry for shops to use the lower end clears in general repair to save money. for the most part you wont notice. but over time it may become more obvious. Good Clear is not cheap for a reason. Good Quality resin and binders are expensive. Its just like Fiberglass.

Very true, at the old shop I used to work at we used base PPG clear for all the repair work that came through.
On the restoes we would do we would use the PPG Glamour clear, if we a bit shiner and is supposed to last longer as well.
FWIW I believe ppg global is their best line. It is also good to understand that what makes a clear "good" depends on what is specifically good about it within its intended use when it was formulated. Some clears will be softer and scratch easier but shine more than others. Where some resist uv rays more and last longer because of this. Some will be harder but tougher requiring more effort to get them to polish up. As with everything car related it is a bit of a give and take.
I actually had really good luck with Eastwood brand paints. Eastwood 2:1 Urethane Clear Gallon and Activators Item #51144ZP Urethane Clear. If I can make it look good, so can anyone else.
BTW-I used the "professional HF gun".
Talk to your painter, each has their own preferred products. Usually prefer what they've been trained on and or use every day, or used in the past. Especially on touch up or blend jobs.
Silco 932 high solids clear….it’s like 59% solids and mixes 2:1….it yields a little over 2 gallons for a bit under $180 It too I believe is German…..
Off the gun finish… no cutting or buffing necessary, and this was my first time ever painting a car…..I did it in my garage…..next I need to paint my ‘73 c10 , same white but with a blue ghost pearl instead of the green seen on my nova!!!!
