I didn't clear mine. I questioned the same thing and decided since my car is only used in nice weather, I should be able to get away without it.
I used the brush-on Duplicolor kit and I really liked it (just get a better brush if you use it - the included brush blows). I think I did about 6 coats of black on mine after I smoothed them out a bit and it's got a nice gloss to it.

I'm in the process of painting calipers now.
I had them media blasted, then high temp primer, then high temp paint, then decals/lettering, and then clear coat. They look better than a mass majority of jobs done that I've seen. The only better way to do it is powder coating rather than painting them.
I figure, if you half-*** it the first time you're just creating a lot more work for the next time around.
Another pointer, make sure you read the can on the paint/clearcoats/primers. Most will say "apply coats with 10 minutes or afterwards wait 7 days to do another coat or clear coat" or something to that effect.

what did you do to keep the lettering so clean and unpainted???
I cleared over the decal.
. My question is, my calipers were polished by the previous owner. Before I paint the calipers should I hit them with like 80-100 grit sandpaper to scuff them up first? Then degrease/clean them good.
scuff them up and use a good etching primer
