Default Is the A pillar on a 4th gen metal?

The reason I am asking is the manager at my local Safelite told me " I had to put the original glass back in a Firebird because recently there were holes in the body. You can't see them until you take the glass out and he had to go to a body shop". I did not ask him what year that car was.
I am changing the windshield only due to pitting before I install a new Smoothie q hood and have the nose painted. If rust did turn up on my A pillar I guess I would have the body shop fix it at the same time. The oem molding looks to still be available for a convertible. Hopefully, I will still be able to find a Pilkington glass. Any suggestions fellas?

grab a magnet and know for sure on your own, but try holding your hand out the window at 70 and ask if plastic could hold the windshield at 150.

Yes, the only way plastic could be strong enough is to be a very thick carbon fiber impregnated plastic and that would cost way more than steel.

Then I guess I have to hope my pillar is not rusted.

Is this a common problem?

A pillars are metal. They do not have holes if I remember correctly. There is a possibility that if the windshield isn’t sealed properly that that metal could rust, but usually that only happens when some hack installs a piece of glass and does so improperly. Don’t think you can find oem glass anymore though.

Thank you, I am less worried now. Also, Pilkington sublet our part number to a Chinese company. So at this point I might as well just get any brand and hope. I found the OEM moldings but I'm not sure it's worth it for the Chinese glass?
