A little confused on how tuning software works.
Am looking at buying HP Tuners, but am not quite sure about how the "credits" work. I have a 98 T/A with a 02 pcm. So if I buy HP tuners and do the 2 credit unlock for my car can I tune my car as much as I want for no additional cost, or do I use credits every time I change something? The way I understand it now for example is, I use it to tune after I buy it. Then if I add h/c/i or some other mod the following year I have to use more credits b/c I'm changing the tune. Is this right? If so then does it charge you more credits EVERY time you change something? My understanding on the unlimited unlock will allow me to tune other 02's but additional credits would be needed for each additional VIN.

Once you license your PCM then you can tune it once or a million times. Only time it will cost more credits is to go to a custom OS (operating system like 2 bar etc)
If you are already there then it will cost you 4 credits to license your PCM then the custom OS seeing as to what your SN is.

Only time after that that you would have to pay for more credits is if you change the PCM for some reason. The crdits liscense you to that PCM. Also if you want to utilize the RTT (Real Time Tuning) it too will cost you 2 credits. I have a total of 6 credits used on my PCM. You would change the OS for 2 crdits if you ever go forced induction or if you want to convert to a SD only OS. But once you convert the PCM to say 2 barr OS and pay the 2 credits, you can switch to any of the OS systems on that PCM without having to pay any more credits. So to tune your car as many times as you want it cost 2 credits, to utilise RTT it cost you 2 more credits, and if you change the OS it costs you 2 credits. 6 credits is the most you will spend on your PCM (unless you change to a different PCM).

I used HPTuners on my swap to just remove VATS, rear O2's, etc.
However, if I take it to a shop to get a real dyno tune, will my HPtuners still work when I get it home? Not that I'd mess with a professional tune...but it would still be nice to access and start learning from there.

If he's got a 2002 PCM, with a 2002 OS, and a 2002 Camaro's VIN number...he'll be fine though...it will just think his car is that 2002 car, not the 98 that the registry of motor vehicles says it is.

If you wanted to go the route of a custom operating system we offer a speed density custom operating system that simplifies speed density tuning which is 2 credits to apply per vehicle.

If he's got a 2002 PCM, with a 2002 OS, and a 1998 VIN flashed into it, then yeah, he'll have problems with HPTuners...I couldn't even get HPTuners to read a friends car that is a 1998 VIN in a 1999 PCM/OS.
