pinging when it's hot out??? O.k, I've read all the threads, all with great info by the way, but I have tried everything. I can't seem to get rid of the pinging and Kr from 4800-redline when it's hot out. Yesterday it was about 90 here in Socal, and it started again. I can't figure out why. I have a lid, slpmaf, k&n, slp cold air, predator tune w/ the fans coming on early, 160 t-stat, cat-back, just installed tr-55's and msd wires this last weekend(the plugs stopped my pinging at part throttle), and 1/2 tank of 91 octane, and 1/2 tank of 100 octane. When it's cool out, the car runs great, but as soon as it gets hot out, I ping. My O2's read 895-905 and my ltft's are at -1.95. Is there anything I can do. Help please Thanks |
The SLP cold air may not be helping you any, it can make some pretty high IAT readings especially at low road speeds. Do you have anything funny like that IAT "timing tricker" going on? The high end could be hurt by fuel filter or other delivery shortfall but this should be visible in the O2s at top end. If they are fading too much you might have to add more PE to "cover" it. Are the LTFTs negative all the way up? With my SLP MAF I was seeing -10s at idle fading to -1s up top, so if that -1.95 is your idle trim value you might be needing to adjust it, or adjust fuel at least. |
Jimmyblue, thanks, i don't have a timing tricker, do you recomend one, or should i get the ftra instead or something? Also, I just changed my fuel filter last month, and my O2's seem to stay up. At idle my ltft's sit at -8.95, then at cruise speed they go to -1.95. Sould I back the timing off a bit? When its cool out, the car runs fine, only when it's hot out. |
I would say the best thing to do is start removing products until the pinging stops. I would say it has something to do with SLP maf and the predator tune. I would start by reinstalling your stock MAF and just start going down the list. |
No, I don't recommend the tricker but since it fools the IAT sensor into -not- pulling spark when hot, it was a potential bad boy. FTRA being plastic and (and a longer lower duct?) would probably be a better CAI setup in every respect except straight durability, not that you expect much physical abuse in the location. Use the Predator to view IAT value and judge it against the outside air temp; on a good setup it should be with 5F of ambient when rolling. It takes more cobbling than you may want to go into, to make that SLP piece not heat soak and warm the air. Predator performance tune pushes about 6 degrees of timing across the board, if I recall, with user able to add about another 3. You might have to pull some back especially with 91 octane, or push the PE up. I would get some ping down below 900mV O2s too, it may just want fatter. The canned tune w/ my MAF put me right about 900mV but that will vary some, and nobody knows exactly what AFR that really works out to be; only that it's kinda close to right. Try another % of PE and see if that works for a "summer tune"; I found on a stockish, SLP MAF setup that full +10% spark needed about +3% PE to not get KR on shifts and the occasional gurgle. That would put me at about 920mV on the O2s. Whether going fatter, or reducing spark leads to the best power output / no ping compromise, is one thing I have yet to pin down. |
