school me on 98 ls1 pcm's

Im building a 98 ls1 camaro and have heard the pcm's aren't so great. Is there any horsepower limitations with it? Is it able to get dyno tuned without any hand helds? Any info is greatly appreciated.

Get rid of it and get a 99+ pcm end thread

MontecarloDrag Sep 21, 2012 06:33 PM

They work fine, very capable.
But, 99+ PCMs are much better, if you have the chance go for it.

GrnGoblin Sep 21, 2012 06:50 PM

What would I need to change it? Pcm and harness? Whats a 98s capabilities?

MontecarloDrag Sep 21, 2012 08:18 PM

Just the PCM, you need to repin the harness using both wiring diagrams. Lot of info here.

98 PCM is capable of high horsepower engines, only if you plan to use high amounts of boost a 99+ PCM is best

I plan on doin a Nitrous car, it sounds like a lot of hassle. Might just look into carb

MontecarloDrag Sep 21, 2012 08:39 PM

Just keep the 98 PCM, much more control than a carb, better fuel economy and you can pass emissions

GrnGoblin Sep 21, 2012 09:02 PM

What does repinning it involve?

You can pass emissions with any thing.... you just delete the codes completely

MonmouthCtyLS7 Sep 23, 2012 09:08 AM

The right tuner should have no problem tuning one...98 pcm here, no problems whatsoever

I doubt you can pass an inspection if they see a carburator in a 98 vehicle, or if they do a sniff test

JUSTINSWS6 Sep 23, 2012 11:59 AM

They don't do sniff test around here or mo. Just plug in under the dash. You can delte all emission codes for good with a hp tuner

No visual inspection, looking for cats or not-legal stuff?

I plan to switch from a '98 to a '02 next month.
I purchased an empty set of connectors so that I can move the wires, one by one, from the '98 connectors to the new connectors. Nearly every wire needs to be repinned; removing all the wires and having 100+ loose wires would likely lead to a mixup.

Michigan does not check for anything not even exhausts. I might have to check with some local tuners if they mess with them.

Nope. Pull In, plug in, pull out. Easy as that.

find some one that tunes ls cars. They can tune it out

87silverbullet Sep 24, 2012 05:39 PM

If you're in Michigan, Livernois is up there and they may be able to tune it.

GrnGoblin Sep 24, 2012 08:42 PM

I'll be avoiding livernois, too much money and they have a bad taste in everyone's mouth around here with the ratio of motor detonations.

OOOOKkkaaaayyy nevermind on that one. If you don't mind the drive Speed Inc has one of the baddest tuners around. He has tuned multiple 7 second cars so a 98 pcm is nothing
