Default Vats causes a slow start.. but car DOES start?

Forgive me if this is the wrong forum to post this in..

Hello everyone.
1998 Z28, auto.

My car always takes a few seconds to start, sometimes after it does start the security light will flash a few times, then shut off. If I turn the key to the "ON" position for a few seconds before starting, it helps it start much quicker. Other than that the car runs great.

My question is, can my vats system be acting up? I was under the impression that if vats was acting up the car would not start at all. Contemplating bypassing vats, but just want to know if I would be wasting my time. I don't see why else the security light would be flashing.

Thanks!

I think I would check for low fuel pressure. Does it help to turn key on/off several times priming up fuel pressure?

Yeah that isn't a VATS thing, that sounds more fuel pressure related. Turning the key to on and waiting a couple seconds allows the pump to prime and build system pressure. Probably your FPR is bad.

I don't remember if the security light normally blinks a few times at startup like a bunch of other lights do or not.

I thought about the fuel pressure thing too. The flashing security light though made me think about the vats though. The security light is supposed to come on when you first start the car, then turn off when all the other lights do. It is not supposed to flash. My security light will continue to flash even after all the other lights shut off.

I will check into the fuel pressure, another thing I read is a dirty MAF will cause this condition.. any truth to that?

Maybe, not sure.

I couldn't remember on that security light, I've only started my car twice this year so far and I didn't pay attention to that light. You may have two separate problems. I really don't think VATS would make it take extra cranks to start as VATS either disables starting altogether or it allows it.

Use a pressure gauge on the rail after it has sat for a while and see if it had bled off pressure. A telltale sign of a bad FPR is the vacuum line will smell like gas if you pull it off the FPR.

Well the problem with that is the FPR is in the tank -__-

Pretty sure the regulator is off the fuel rail, not in the fuel tank. Driver side...

Many confuse that for the regulator, it looks like one. It's actaully a "pulsator".

correct

It's worth a try to do the vats bypass, takes just a few minutes to do

Could be an intermittent vats short on start up, also if you have the original 17 year old fuel filter you might want to change that $10 part out..

OK that's weird, it looks almost exactly like the FPR on my 3.8 and the FPR on the 4.2 in my Trailblazer.

Sorry
