Default P0336, Car randomly dies.

A couple months ago it started randomly dying on me. I got p0336 code. So I replaced the crank position sensor and did a CASE relearn. It has been fine for awhile.

Then last week it died on me again. Wouldn't start back up. I waited about ten minutes and then it fired right up.

Today I took it out to run a few errands and it died again. I tried for 45 mins to get it started again. Sometimes it would run for a few seconds but sound horrible, or it would run fine for about 40 seconds then sound like garbage and die. When it was running like garbage I would have no reading on the tach.

But after letting it sit for a bit waiting on the tow truck, it fired right up and we drove it onto the flatbed.

When I changed the CPS before, I did notice that the connector was coated in oil, I believe my rear main is leaking. Also, I have an issue with my harness to my ECU, sometimes the alternator won't charge, but if I grab the wiring by the ECU and just move it a touch the alternator will start charging again.

So I am thinking that either the CPS is getting shorted out from the oil, my reluctor wheel is moving randomly, or it is my harness.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks

Except I have a feeling it is the reluctor and that is internal engine right?

Alternator: if it works when you move the harness then you have one or more fractured wires in your harness...

You possibly have a wiring problem with CKP wiring, either a fracture or connector problem or the wires melted together.

Oil does not cause shorts.

Also check crankshaft end play and/or if the CKP reluctor is loose.

Thanks. I am going to start digging into the harness to see if I can find anything.

Also how would I check the crankshaft end play or the reluctor?

Thanks,

David

You gently pry the crankshaft in/out (at the damper/pulley) while measuring with a dial indicator.
