Default 5.3 High IAT Temp advice

Hey Guys, just looking for some advice or insight on a current concern with my IAT's while tuning my first GM platform with HP tuners.

Engine- 5.3 (03 iron block)
5 Wire maf

Given I am located in Central Florida and temps here right now are mid 90's easy without the heat index. I have been seeing IAT's climb to 160's, I then installed some DEI reflecta gold on my intake pipe that actually brought the IAT's into the high 140's roughly. My other concern was the 5 wire plastic housing Maf could be an issue absorbing all the heat in the tight engine compartment. Being new to this platform I was wondering if there was anyone with suggestion of placement of the MAF and also maybe a suggested brand or part # maf to use. Right now the intake is short, out of the TB it makes a quick bend to the drivers side and stops near the headlight, I am considering re-routing down into the bumper for more air flow. Any advice or suggestions would help from someone whose experienced this before.

Thanks!

I had the same issue in my s10 swap and Studebaker before I built an air box to draw in fresh air from the grill instead of hot air from the engine compartment. Build some sort of box to force cool air into the filter.

Heat soak can be a problem at idle, but once I'm up to speed, my IAT usually shows approximately 10°F above ambient.

Running e-fans full time can help. If it's a belt fan
then I guess you've got all the engine bay cooling
you can hope for.

Making a proper cold air duct and putting the IAT
where it draws from, is a good way to go. The
air mass errors at least will be benign, while a hot
IAT relative to true air temp makes for lean fuel
and extra advance (at least until those spark adders
kick in).

MAF can go "wherever" but best to put it after some
length of fairly straight tubing, especially if you go
and descreen. Right after bends, is bad.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I Currently have 2 e-fans running full time. Next I am planning on re-routing the filter down near the front bumper with ducting for better airflow. I do have the 5 wire truck MAF that has the IAT integrated, so I cannot change the location of it.

What is the benefit of descreening the MAF?

Is it possible to run an IAT breakout on this MAF and then run an external IAT?

That's what I have done, in the end. My 85mm (truck)
MAF IAT is unused, a Digi-Key thermistor wired to the
PCM connector and located inside the cowl vent well
takes its place. You could as easily use your old F-body
independent IAT sensor. But for a custom wired setup
the Digi-Key thermistors are going to be way cheaper.

I don't have the P/N handy but there have been posts
(mine and others) with that.

Cool, I purchased a casper breakout harness and some intake components and plan to relocate the filter and the IAT sensor now. I'll report back my results once its completed. Once again thanks for the advice guys!

So I ended up re-routing my intake into the front bumper, underneath the headlight and purchasing the Casper breakout harness and relocated the IAT sensor next to the filter. I am now seeing approx. 8 degrees above ambient and roughly a 60 degree difference from my last set up. Thanks for the advice and insight, headed to my SCCA event this weekend to enjoy this toy!
