can't rid the ping

I have tried everything. AMW catch can, seafoam, new fuel filter, cleaning maf, new spark plugs, lucas upper lub, fuel injector cleaner and even a 160 thermostat, which I'm not using now but will put it back in soon for summer. I even had the car on a dyno a yr ago for 1hr and my factory tune is fine. 14.7 a/f at part throttle and 11.5-12 a/f at wot and made good power. Only had 17 degrees of timing though. This was 100% stock. Only thing I haven't tried yet is some NGK TR6 plugs.

SmokingWS6 Apr 25, 2005 10:52 PM

17* of timing at wot?

Are your referring to ping as somethig you hear, or something showing up on the knock sensors? I run 28* at wot with little to no KR.

We need to know exactly what your hearing, seeing before making guesses.

rich Z Apr 25, 2005 11:16 PM

It's the rattling pinging with up to 6 degrees of kr on my predator which I don't run just use live data

WS6FirebirdTA00 Apr 25, 2005 11:36 PM

might have a knock sensor going bad? or your MAFT could be scrweing you up. its prob learned knock by now and could be compensating enough to say its rich enough but isnt. i would try to put the stock tune back in the car and take the MAFT off and see how that does.

SmokingWS6 Apr 26, 2005 11:39 AM

ahh yes, I didn't noticed you had a MAFT. Take that off and it seems your knock sensors could be dead.

WS6FirebirdTA00 Apr 26, 2005 11:44 AM

im just wondering, if the sensors were dead it would throw a code for them, or at least it should

rich Z Apr 27, 2005 07:56 PM

I'm 100% stock right now. Ignore the sig. If my knock sensors were dead I wouldn't get kr.

WS6FirebirdTA00 Apr 27, 2005 08:00 PM

if your knock sensors were dead you would get the max amount of KR, my friends camaro had dead knock sensors and it automaticly pulled timing because they were faulty ;)

rich Z Apr 27, 2005 08:29 PM

I'll have to get some 100 octane fuel and see if the kr goes away. If it doesn't then the knock sensors are bad. Problem is getting GM to do anything without a code.

WS6FirebirdTA00 Apr 27, 2005 08:35 PM

yeah i mean if they are bad they SHOULD throw a code. but you said you were hearing audible knock anyway right?

rich Z Apr 27, 2005 09:06 PM

I hear audible pinging with kr. Most of it is at part throttle but if I put my lid or fipk on then that makes my long trims positive so I have to tune my maft 10% rich base then that gets the lt's to - and 0 at wot. However I sometims will ping past 4k rpm. Also if I shift fast at any rpm I get loud pinging upshifting once I get back on the throttle. The weird thing is the first 5k miles on the car, now 38k I had no pinging and kr. Even with a lid and + lt's in 90 degree summer heat I had 0 pinging. I have read than in order is get the pistonsb really clean you have to spray is down the plug holes. I might try some tr6 plugs while I;m at it.

WS6FirebirdTA00 Apr 27, 2005 09:12 PM

so you dont have the MAFT on the car anymore? its bone stock? if u swapped all thsi out maybe the computer needs a reset to clear out anything it has learned? i dont know just throwing ideas around

Is that 17* programmed or logged?

2kta--89formula Apr 27, 2005 09:21 PM

I went thru the same scenerio and it turned out to be a cat going bad.

great point, never thought about that, my cats are gone so i never think of it.....thats something to check, if everything is stock there should be no ping

rich Z Apr 27, 2005 09:34 PM

Already had the driverside car replaced 4 months ago. Also my mpg sucks. Used to get 25 on the highway and now get 20.

WS6FirebirdTA00 Apr 27, 2005 09:34 PM

how are your fuel trims bank to bank? maybe a bad o2?

rich Z Apr 27, 2005 09:34 PM

I threw a code for the driverside bad cat when It went bad.

2kta--89formula Apr 27, 2005 09:41 PM

I think mine was on it's way out but not yet set a code.....I had bad KR and pinging.....gutted the cats......no more KR or pinging. I tried everything, plugs, wires, 02 sensors, Clean MAF, fuel filter, All back to stock, 160 Thermo and Cooling system flush, Top End Cleaner x 3, etc....etc....

CrazeD_SS Apr 27, 2005 10:00 PM

All because of a cat eh?

Hmm.. I have pinging/rattling when the cars warms up. Around 1600-1900 RPMs if I press the gas in past halfway :(

I've done all the stuff you have.. plugs, fuel filter, air filter, oil change/filter, coolant flush, top end cleaner.. No dice :(

Im about to replace my shorties and stock y/cats with some LTs.. I really need to find a tuner though.

:bang:
