Default Sweeping guages now GM standard in 2006

Every time I have a low battery condition in my 1999 F-body, I get a sweeping guage condition upon initial start up. All the needles on all the dash board guages take a full sweep then max out and return to mormal.

This always freaked me out but now that I understand it I have accepted it as GMs goof on all their good customers.

So ....anyway I rented a new Pontiac V6 in San Francisco last week which had six miles on the clock. Every time I started the car I got a sweeping dial condition. I LOVE THIS COMPANY

Apparently, the GM engineers loved the goof so much they have now incorporated it into all new GM cars. WOW!!!!!

It makes me want to buy a new GTO.... How about you?

I think it's a self check for the gauge set. I was in to motorcycles recently, and all the late model sport bikes are like this.

Try a battery load check/replacement first - then look for TSB 99-08-49-009 Trip Odometer Resets to Zero (Exchange/Install Instrument Cluster). I think it's a '99 thing.

One of the terminals on my 98 corroded right off the battery. Until then it did the same thing. Also happened on a 98 Cavalier I had for a while. Delco makes crappy batteries that fall apart.

Many of the new gauges are using stepper motors, and this is an easy way to validate its range of motion and "re-zero." Well that, and people think it looks cool

i had a 99 z28 before my 00 ws6, and my Z did it and my TA doesnt. but the 99 Z did have to have the cluster replaced and all was good, no trip reset, and no sweeping gauges

I forgot to check the trip meter to see if it reset each time i started the new Pontiac. I assume the sweeping guage start up deal is designed into the car...

yup..

vettes have done it for a long time too... mostly because of looks.

consider our cars more "advanced" in that they remember gauge positions until they're unplugged.... most other cars with stepper motor gauges sweep every time because they "forget".
