Shed some light on SES

Tonight my SES came on. It was a little after messing with a cougar that tempted me. (Just having some fun) and after that it come on. My car just hit 65,000 miles 5 miles after that. Is this just a coinsidence (However it is spelled) or is there some kind of maintenence that comes with this many miles on it? The Car runs fine since then. In the owners manual and on these boards it is said that an SES that stays on is emissions. Tell me exactly what that means, like the certain problem parts involved etc.. All my mods are in my sig and have been done for atleast 2 years. I plan on going to AutoZone to get it tested ASAP but I just wanted to know a little more on this subject. Thanks in advance!

SES :aug2:

once you go to azone let us know what the code is.....

till then .. not much can be said....

probably a cat or slow response O2 code.... but once you know the codes.... we can help alot more

Ok, took it to AZ and he said it couldnt read it because it was a manufacturer code. It did say it was emissions code though. He said the best thing to do was to take it to a dealer and let them scan it. He said it cost $30. I guess thats what ill have to do. I will let you guys know what it is. Thanks.

I'd try another Autozone, the local dealer here charges a $75 "diagnostic fee." Shoot, you can even buy a universal OBDII code reader from harbor freight for $39.95. Another option is to just reset the PCM which will clear the code(s), and see if the SES even comes back on.

those obd-II universals will not tell you dealer specific codes. they will give you generalized like misfires and o2's but will not release dealer manufacturer specifics and i would try another AZ they dont have good scanners but they do have ones that will give you manufacturer specific

ha its 87 an hour at my dealership!!

I bit the bullet and took it to the dealer. They charged me $62 for it. The problem was in the exhaust and the name of the part was something like a secondary air injection valve? He said it's the part that shoots oxygen into the exhaust and one of them is closed off. Either way the parts are just $32 for both. They said replace both because usually when one goes the other one would to.

its 88 a hour at my dealer. they are robbers. the mechanic gets 25 or less of that.......

Air check valve was clogged - bet it was either P1416 or P1415 - Autozone shouldn't have had a problem telling you what the code was.

You could probably fix it yourself, this is a very simple thing to do if you have a few basic tools and very little mechanical inclination.

Something else happened today. My battery died on me. I got it replaced and after I unlocked the radio the SES light would come on only right before I start the car. It is not on while running anymore but Im pretty sure that it will come back on. What sucks is my car has to be inspected and im worried it wont pass because of that deverter valve and the parts have to be ordered to. what a day!

Where exactly is this valve located at?

2001NBMZ28 09-03-2005 02:45 PM

Replacing the battery reset the code - it'll come back on after a few cold starts if the valve is bad. There's a pic of one (right side) here http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/attach...chmentid=28792 you only need the part that screws into the metal air pipe, and there's one on each side of the engine, and they're the same part number. Should be available at your local parts store.

thanks fellas. I got it fixed last night. Parts were $38. Thanks again for the much needed advice!

Glad you got it. Don't know what type of inspections they're doing in NC now, when I left Cary (Wake Co.) a couple years ago they were talking about going to the OBDII scans. If that's the case put some miles on it before you take it in - not for the valve replacements - but because the PCM was reset. There's also a GM drive cycle you can do if inspection is needed immediately. www.obdii.com/drivecycle.html

Is that part of the check air system? if so why don't you just remove it and pull a couple fuses.. I'm pretty sure thats all i had to do when i removed mine.. am i wrong about this? anybody correct me if i'm wrong!

Its free and never have to worry about it again..

2001NBMZ28 09-05-2005 10:24 AM

Do you remember which fuses you pulled? I'll give it a try. I thought about doing !AIR once without having the codes tuned out and removed the air pump fuse just to see what would happen, and threw code P0412.

RollinSScamaro 09-05-2005 11:01 AM

well i think its 2 fuses.. i can't quite remember.. i read it on a thread a long time ago when i did it.. do some searching on it and see what you can find.. or just post a thread about which fuses to remove.. i'm pretty sure there are 2 though.. I had no problems after that! good luck and let me know!
