Can't get trouble codes

I've tried to get the trouble codes out of my 94 trans am with a scanner ( a cheaper one, those from wal mart) and with a paper clip but the only thing that happens is the fan turns on and no codes or blinking. any ideas?

OBD-1, if you jumper the mode select To Gnd. in the ALDL connector you should get the fan as well as at least a code 12 (flashed on the Check Engine Light). Does the Check Engine Light come on steady with just the ign. on?

No code 12 and the check engine light keeps turn off

I think you need to use a scanner for '94

I think if you have the upper connector it should work- not sure with the lower. 94-95 were transition years to obdii.

I guess I do need a good scanner. Bad luck. damn it.
