Default Wideband O2 sensors with stock PCM

Now with the advent of LS1 edit. It seems that we're still missing one important piece of the puzzle.

The wideband O2's. This is part of the reason that I'm doing DFI.

However.....has anyone explored the possibility of using a wideband o2 for our cars?

Just curious....

Making changes to tables is a lot different than changing the entire closed loop architecture of the PCM operation.

The code is so bloated on the LS1 (512kb code and data) that I would deem it nearly impossible to write in a subroutine that takes care of a WB O2. They have a completely different scaling and voltage range than stock sensors. To me, the dis/reassembly would be just incredibly time consuming and mind boggling.

IMHO the best option would be to find an unused 0-5V input on the PCM and use it to datalog an external WB O2. Not really use it to run the PCM, but a scan tool could potentially be used to read the data and log it with everything else. The F-body LT1, for example, doesn't use the Oil Temperature sensor input that the Corvette has. This sensor input could be changed to log an O2 (but AFAIK nobody has done it yet).

This does not really help you directly, but FJO inc www.fjoinc.com sells a wideband o2 sensor and datalogging. You can connect it to your computer to datalog. I bought one a month ago, it can log air fuel ratio, engine rpm, and another 0-5 vdc source. So you can easily make new table for ls1 edit.

I thought wideband 02 sensors have a shorter lifespan than the narrow jibbies. Some one told me that before, it might not be true, but it would seems like there should be a compromise (besides cost)involved somewhere.

Otherwise our cars (and lots of race teams) would already run them.

Maybe not.

They wont last long with leaded, but other than that speedpro (FAST) uses them. The sensor that comes with the FJO unit is a NTK which costs about $225. Actually the 1995 fast burn hondas use a wideband from the factory.

If you go to http://www.diy-efi.org/ they show you how to make a wideband setup with this sensor. It does not have a display or logging. You have to use a voltmeter and then look at a calibration table.

Yeah, leaded gas kills them. You have to run unleaded and I think 104 is about the best you can get. Many race cars run 110, 118 octane leaded gas.
