Does the 98's require a different cable?

I am wanting to add my VIN to a buddy's cable, and his car is a 99. I have heard that the 98 requires something different. Is it just the software? Or do I need a whole other cable?

you talking about ls1 edit? I believe 98' are all by there selves.
