Testing o2's...code P0420

I tried searching but couldn't find anything.

I'm getting the code P0420 so I had Autozone check it out and they told me it was my cats, the I talk to some other people about it and they are tell me that it's my o2 sensors. And to maybe help diagnose, I am getting the sulfer smell when I drive it hard and it seems I've lost power too, AND I'm noticing alot of black shit on the garage floor where my cut out is. SO my question is, before I go spend a bunch of money on o2 sensor or whatnot, is there anyway to test them to find out for sure if they're bad? :bang:

P0420 is most likely the drivers side cat, but could be the 02. You can swap the rear 02's from side to side, delete the code, if it throws P0430 for the passenger side it's the 02, P0420 repeat the cat. Should be lots of posts for P0420 - they're covered for 8yrs/80K under the federal emissions warranty too.

So couldn't I just remove the cats and just program out the rear o2's? That should take care of the problem right?

Yep, that'll work.

Well I switched the rear O2's from side to side today and sure enough, a P0430 code...
