COT: what happens when CAT's overheat? A buddy and I are trying to tune my 98 TA for nitrous. we have it pretty close, but the COT is screwing with us by commanding 11.7 when the cats get hot. we have the option to turn it off, but we dont know what that will do. IF the only result is the cats get hot and stop working correctly and only piss off some gov official then Im cool with it. but IF one of the following happens then no go: so hot it damages surrounding parts/wires gets clogged when its too hot um... i guess thats it..... so is it save to turn off COT? |
Worst case the cats could get red hot. It is all just a chemical reaction. If you hot rodded it with spaces inbetween it shouldn't be a problem. When in doubt use a temp gun! You will not clog or ruin the cat unless you are so pig rich it is also hurting the motor or you have misfiring cylinders. |
Getting the brick of the catalyst too hot has the potential to literally melt the substrate to the point where what used to a decent flowing lattice becomes a pile of moon rocks that seriously increase backpressure. |
TurboLx is correct. |
You can turn it of during tuning runs but I wouldn't leave it off for good unless you remove the cats. |
