Default No heat and running hot?

Just got a 93 Pontiac Trans Am. It's a 5.7L V8. It has no heat and it's running hot. Thinking thermostat but not sure what to think of if it's not that. Any thoughts?

check to see if you have any coolant at all. several years ago, my mother had a taurus that had no heat, but registered ice cold on the temp gauge. it had no coolant in it at all.....a hose leaked and lost it all. luckily it was winter, and she didnt drive it too much before i fixed it.

Air bubbles can cause overheating especially if they
get trapped by the 'stat. Drilling a 3/32" hole in the
plate might help that.

But the heater core should not have anything to do
with that. Might listen for vacuum leaks and the sound
of diverter flaps moving when you work the climate
control mode dial. Or look for dumb stuff like rerouted
hoses, from someone not wanting to fix a leaking
heater core and maybe messing up coolant flow in
the process. Or, maybe the core is just plugged from
using well water as "redneck antifreeze" and that's got
the coolant not-circulating until the stat opens.

Go ahead and get greasy while you're waiting for
opinions, nothing beats firsthand.

If you go down under, look for crusty stuff at bottom of water pump. Moms '96 Impala SS (LT1) was getting hot and the pump was her problem. No noises, no significant coolant loss... squeezing hoses made all of the appropriate gurgles, etc.
We replaced stat too while we were at it.

it may not even have a thermostat in it, and heater core could be bypassed as well.

Both items are likely related - so I'm thinking air lock.

Especially on an LT1 with reverse flow cooling.
