Default Newbie LS Question

I have a 1997 TransAm with a 5.7 L V-8 and a WS6 performance package. I thought this had an LS1 engine, but if I'm understanding the Wikipedia article, these engines weren't used in F-Body vehicles until 1998. So what do I have under the hood?

You have an LT!. It's pretty easy to tell the difference between the 2. The ls1 is an all aluminum design.

Yup, you have an LT1 car. Not an LS1 car.

Time to save for a swap.

Thanks for the education guys. I'm definitely an ignoramus about anything to do with performance or racing, but I want to learn! My motivation from moving from my expensive, boring, and NOT PAID FOR Avalanche was purely financial. I decided to start looking at TransAms because I remember how much fun my '76 was back in high school. My car is paid for now, and I don't currently plan on going to the track with it (but that might change!). That being said, I found this thread on a search (some of it is over my head, but I got the general idea after the first two pages and stopped reading):

http://www.ls1.com/forums/f35/lt1-vs...24/index2.html

I think I'll plan to keep the LT1 and do everything I can to keep it running as a daily driver power plant for as long as I can. I like the body on my '97, and the vehicle is in overall great condition. I might add some mods later, after I finish learning basic stuff (like whether or not I have an LS1 !!). I would love to get some commentary concerning the above thread. Thanks again for the enlightenment!

ps I'm not trying to be non-etiqeuttish, so if the link to the other forum is considered poor taste, I'll edit my post; just let me know. I'm not going to join the other forum BTW.

There are some pretty quick LTx-powered cars out there. In fact, a lot of them gather once a year to race.

I think mine's pretty fast even without any mods; I'm not planning to race it, but I still might add some mods later "just for fun."
