Default Heavy Bird On A Diet

Starting to get my '01 Trans Am on Jenny Craig. She's quite heavy.

Started with the junk in the trunk, and working my way to the front. Who else has taken out the rear bumper supports?

If you're really looking to cut more weight back there, you should cut off those mufflers. Probably weight more than the bumper supports.

Will that shave more weight than the bumper supports, no, but it will go against what the goal of the car is. Stock looking car, all the way down to the rims.

Next, I'm going for the door bars or the carpet deadening. Anyone have a thread on gutting everything from the rear seats?

I'd leave the door bars unless you're getting a cage, my .02

Look up "STUDDERIN" on here. He has a very thorough thread on his weight reduction. You can get these cars good and light.

Is that the on where he actually weighed all the wiring he took out? And the same one where he lighten his steering column? If so yes that thread needs to be a sticky for the people to go through on weight reduction.

honestly look for other weight savings, the parts you are removing are safety equipment that is there for a reason, if your gonna street drive it you'll want that stuff in place.

also that "support" as you call it is your actual functional "crash absorbing" bumper and also supports the bumper cover without some support there you will likely see sagging in the bumper in the long run, This is a known issue for the front bumoers, for guys that have done the same there.

My bumpers haven't sagged at least I can't notice. It's a lot more than a few pounds tho. That being said I will be getting a front bumper support but only so I can mount my larger trans cooler there

Get a lightweight battery or relocate it. These cars are nose-heavy so that's where you should look into reducing weight.

Next wallet mod is a MWC Front Bumper Support. This is not a street car, but the cage will eventually come. $$ sometimes is tight. "Free" mods for now.

Is your rear bumper just as sturdy now or does it move/flap at high speeds? Removing the 'junk' would make me nervous unless some other form of support replaced it (not for crash purposes, but for body support so the bumper wouldn't move or rub at higher speeds).

Does it move at high speeds? I haven't had an issue with it yet, but in the long run, I will get the MWC Rear Support. I did this for both of my Camaros, however this is a larger bumper cover. If you use all the bolts and the plastic clips to put it all back on, the only flimsy part would be underneath the license plate, but even that isn't that flimsy.

Pulled her out of the garage, you can see that there isn't any movement on the bumper. I have Solid Motor Mounts.

All that stuff absorbs low speed impacts without doing damage to the car. I would not do this for a car that is driven on normal roads. Without that material, a normal tap (parallel parking in a tight space, etc.) that would not typically do damage, could end up costing you. $$$

To clear everyone up, this is NOT a street car.

Then you have a lot of cutting wires you need to do and drilling holes.
