Can you swap out 98' steel fuel tank 99-02 plastic one?
Has anyone done this and is it a straight swap out? If not, what modifications would I expect? Thanks in advance.

I have compared some of the 1998 to 1999-2002 fuel tanks on eBay and it is hard to completely tell if the components are the same between the two. I did search the forum hoping someone had done this swap and had posted a write up, but apparently not. If I do this project and it entails that I modify anything to work for my 1998 Firebird TA, I'll document and post a write up with pics. In the meantime I hope anybody can shed some light on the project. Thanks

if I remeber correctly the 98 tank has 4 lines coming off the pump and the 99 up has 3, I don't know where all these go to know how interchangeable they are. the chassis's are the same so I can't see any reason it couldn't physically fit, probably need the straps too. Then you need to compare the wiring harness that plugs in at the body behind the driver rear seat right in front of the tank to see if anything changed there, I think that harness has something to do with the fuel pump, I don't know, I just remember seeing it when I was under there one time.

Wow, thanks FirstYrLS1Z!
If I can trust that post then I can now go forward with my own research by looking at my tank, the plumbing/wiring with the hope it is an easy swap. I will document what I do and post up when finished.
If you all can in the mean time, please continue to offer more info to back up the possibility that is an "Easy Swap".
Thanks, Joe

You can, I did it on mine. I did the same as the guy in the link. I swapped the entire tank, fuel lines, bucket, evap etc over. I had a 99 Camaro and a 98 TA. Since I was selling the Camaro I figured I'd do the swap since I wanted to keep the plastic tank to save some weight in my TA. It was a fairly straight forward swap.
