Trans am or Mustang GT

So I currently own a 2001 mustang GT and love it, but I'm really in love with 2000-02 Trans ams with the performance, exterior, and interior. Should I just keep my mustang and upgrade it since I already have plans for it or should I trade it or sell it for a Trans am?

Daniel Richards 01-21-2015 01:39 AM

2001 mustang GT curb weight 3305 with a 4.6 v8 producing 260 HP and 300 ft lb.s of torque vs 2002 Trans Am curb weight about 3500 pounds (plus or minus 15 pounds depending on trans) with a 5.7 v8 producing 310 HP and 340 ft. lb. of torque so when we do the math the mustang is 0.07867 HP for every pound of vehicle and the Trans Am is 0.08857 HP per pound or about 10-12% more in the horsepower to weight ratio, then in torque the mustang is 0.09077 ft.lb. of torque per vehicle pound and the Trans Am is 0.09714 ft.lb. per vehicle pound or about 7% more torque for every pound of vehicle, the numbers don't lie the Trans Am is a superior vehicle and frankly it looks better.

you would need to add about 30 horsepower and 20 ftlb's of torque to the mustang just to get it to the same power to weight ratios.

why would you even come on a ls1 site to ask opinion between an ls1 and mustang? not being a dick. just curious what the thought process was on that one.

Jay180 01-21-2015 04:00 AM

Well I wanted ls1 guys to give me their opinions and which would be better to go with. I should have been more specific with details. What are the pros and cons to owning a Trans AM?

HCI2000SS 01-21-2015 05:08 AM

I traded my 2004 Mustang Gt for my current 2000 Camaro SS. Main reason....power ;)

My stang was no slouch (400rwhp/500rwtq) but it was at the mercy of the stock internals, and I wanted something with more potential

This guy ^ has your answer.

What do you like better? We already made our decision.

Go get your car man.

I currently own both a 2007 Mustang GT/CS (5 speed manual) and a 2001 Trans Am (automatic). I am not brand loyal and tell it like it is from personal experience. Both cars were basically new when purchased (3,000 miles on the Ford). I'm not comparing an 80,000 miles car with a 20,000 miles car here. Both are 'stock'. My 6 year older Trans Am is slightly faster and more powerful then my '07 GT. No doubt about it. Both cars are a blast to drive and I wouldn't sell either one right now. In comparison with your '01 GT, a sweet non abused T/A would be light years better than your '01. It's up to you what you want to do. If you can afford a nice T/A, get it. If you have just a few grand to spend, stick with the car you have. You don't need aggravation with a new ride that needs all kinds of work.
Best of luck!

It's your car get what you want.

I went from a 99 Trans Am to a 02 Mustang Gt to a 99 z28.

DD I would get the mustang again. With the right bolt ons and right plan of attack it can be pretty quick and feels more solid TO ME

Weekend/street/race car is why I am back in a F body.

Jay180 01-21-2015 11:17 AM

Oh man you guys are really making me want to go get a T/A right now! Haha thanks for your guys opinions they really help. I think I'm going to start looking for an affordable T/A and give up my stang 😢

98CayenneT/A 01-21-2015 11:43 AM

In my opinion there is no comparison. And if ya ask me stock 01 gt's are just so damn slow!
A ls1 t/a will be a massive upgrade in EVERY aspect! I guarantee you will not have any regrets

JohnnyBs98WS6Rag 01-21-2015 11:55 AM

IMO, Mustangs didn't become even remotely comparable to an LS1 F-bod until the Coyote 5.0 was installed.......... like over 10 years after the last LS1 f-bod was built.

Did you expect anything less?

:D

I just think that the fourth generation Mustang ('94~'04) is just butt-ugly. It doesn't compare to the sexy curves of a fourth gen Firebird.

On looks alone, it's a no brainer.

If I was to ever have a Mustang (GASP!) It'd be a 1969 fastback or the current generation.

bjonesws6 01-21-2015 12:41 PM

F-Body all day long, i have had 2 96 gt, 2 97 and a 02, not even if i put them altogether would i have beaten a ws6 or ss, now. I had 01 ws6 and sold that for a 01 ss, it came down to which f body i wanted loved the ws6 but i really love my ss

This right here. In my opinion, asking if you should get a Trans Am or a Mustang GT would be like asking if I should bang a Dallas Cowboy's cheerleader or Honey Boo-Boo's mom. I think even the majority of Mustang GT owners would tell you to go with the Trans Am.

Jay180 01-21-2015 01:08 PM

Which is more reliable? What's the most common problems you guys have encountered or have heard of?

Paul Bell 01-21-2015 01:20 PM

Who or what is Honey Boo-Boo?!?

Just one thing to note, the LS1 doesn't have 305,310,320 or 325hp. They all have ~350hp regardless if its a 98 Z28/Formula or an 02 WS6/SS though the 01-02s tend to be very slightly more powerful. Its widely known among the GM crowd that GM under-rated the 4th gen F-Bodies to protect Corvette sales. They even did it with the LT1s.

Having driven a 03 Mustang plenty when I was with my ex, I can tell you its generally a more " grown up " car. Seating is higher up, visibility is slightly better and it has an actual trunk.

On the downside, they don't look nearly as nice, the interior is bottom line one of the worst I have ever seen and they're not that fast.

The F-Body has more of a fighter jet feel to it. You sit lower down in a much sleeker car, the dash gives you actual usable information since everything is labeled and numbered as opposed to the Mustangs simple gauge setup and good god is the LS1 far more powerful than a 2v 4.6. I would imagine the F-Body has a better weight distribution too since the 2v 4.6 is a OHC Iron Block as opposed to a OHV Aluminum everything.
