Default Parking light glitch

I have a 1999 Pontiac firebird V6. The left front parking light has been acting up recently. Whenever I turn the headlights on and then proceed to turn them off the left front parking light stays on but the right one doesn't. I recently replaced the left front one. The light only turns off when I remove the key from the ignition. Any help would be appreciated.

What does this mean? Did you rewire the socket?

In your bulbs, there are two filaments:

1) Shared by the Daytime Running Lights and Turn signals
2) Parking Lights

You should see illumination all the time. When you turn the headlights on, you should see the lights dim and then "turn back on" as the filaments switch from DRL mode to Parking Light mode.

So, when you say that lights "stay on", you should confirm if the conditions are right for the DRL's to illuminate. That will help things make sense.

To test the bulbs and socket wiring, you should do two things:
- Turn the parking lights on. (Bulbs should be the same intensity.)
- Turn the hazard lights on. (Bulbs should flash and be the same intensity.)

If the above two things work and you still have other issues, then the problem is likely with wiring/systems deeper in the car.

See tests above. If you have issues passing them, please post the type of bulb you put in.

I suspect that the bright filament in the right side bulb is burned out. The rest is normal behavior as wssix99 pointed out except that your right side is not returning to DRL mode because the filament there is burned out. Does your turn signal on the right side go on but not flash? That's another indication of a burned out bulb. Replace that bulb and you should see both sides go bright when the ignition is on and the headlights off (and the parking brake is not engaged).
