Default 88 bird horsepower

I've got an 88 firebird formula, totaly stock car. I'm looking for fairly inexpensive ways to add horespower. The car is stock other than the exaust and the tranny. Anybody with ideas?

You posted this in the wrong section, It should be in hybrid's & conversions. Ask there how to drop a LS1 in there! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="gr_images/icons/tongue.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

Second, buy a used LS1 and drop in some heads and a cam. Third, spray the **** out of it.

Which engine does it have, the 305 or the 350?

I had an '86 TA with the 305. IMO, it's not worth modding. My buddy had a '87 Forumla 350. That thing had decent power.

I agree that the 305 is not worth modding, it'll never make the power a 350 will with the same mods. First thing to do here is to put in a 350 if this car has the 305. The cams were terrible in some of the years of the 305, most of these ended up with rounded off lobes in less than 80k.

The car has the 350 LT1 in it. It has a lot of potential. It's tuned port injected if that helps you guys at all. It's really responsive off the line, the mid range isn't all that. I ran dual 2.25's down the single exaust chanel, side by side, That was interesting. I've got 40 series flowmasters out the back with covette tips. She sounds nice and crispy.

The Tuned Port Injected engine is not the LT1. The LT1 was only available in the f-body from 93-97.

Most people on the internet mistakenly refer to the F-body's 87-92 350 as an L98, although technically speaking that's the code for the 85-91 Corvette 350 engine only, while the f-body 350 is actually known by a different RPO code (can't recall which but I know a 3rd gen expert will speak up)

Unless you swapped in an LT1, you have a mid 14 second car on your hands...at best. I am sticking to my original theory. Sell it and get an LS1. Or better yet an LS6.

If you have the L98 350, they were rated at 245 HP and 335 torque. They won't rev real high and the TPI restricts the breathing potential. Do the basic mods of headers and exhaust, pulleys, airfoil, and a nice stall. Check out thirdgen.org and camaroz28.com for more info. BTW, I owned a 1989 Formula...cool car!

The L98 in F-Bodys was RPO B2L, the package was RPO L98. Anyone who says to junk that "pos" and get an LS1 is just ignorant, or joking. Different people have different purposes for their cars, and these cars with a built SBC can run almost as fast as a built LS1. But it's not all about ETs. I won't even get into the rest, all I can say is that I've dealt with L98s LT1s and LS1s I know what they can do and they are all great engines in their own realms. Your best resource is going to be www.ThirdGen.org though. Lots of good info there.

That would've been me...and yes, I was joking. We're all so LS1 biased I always throw that out there like it's the end all solution. Kind of poking fun at ourselves.

Hey thanks Mark, I do like the way the car runs already, and I know it has a lot of potential. I,m trying to decide where to start, any suggestions?

I would look into putting the accel miniram and get rid of that stock intake. Headers, exhaust, gears. Worst thing GM did was offer the 350 in an automatic only. Drop a 6-speed with 4:10s and you'll be moving. My GTA was good for burnouts thats about it.
