Depends on how it was optioned the standard exhaust has a single muffler between the gas tank and the rear axle. it is a single in dual out set up similar to 3rd and 4th gen F-bodies.
The optional exhaust consisted of a Ypipe after the Cat and two mufflers positioned under the rear seats.
this is what my `79 had on it when i bougt it back in 1990.

im not 100% sure, close to 90%.....but i dont think any late 2nd gens ever came with two mufflers. just because you bought it like that 21 years after it was made doesnt mean it came like that. true duals are a very easy and common aftermarket swap on these cars. im fairly sure every 2nd gen came with ONE big, crossover muffler behind and above the axle. my 78 TA has true duals after headers......sure never came from the factory that way.

Actually the car was 11 yrs old and I bought it from the original owners wife. It was box stock 403 Olds Automatic w/T-tops and I never said it had true duals.
The factory system had a Ypipe after the manifolds to the single pan convertor then to a Ypipe and TWO Mufflers. This setup was standard on W72 400 4spd cars for 1979 and optional on Formula's and Trans Am's.
Not sure what year the system became available but my guess would be `77 or `78 and like I said it was an option vs the standard crossflow setup.

I just did the exhaust on a 78 Z28 and it was a crossflow type above the rear axle.

Mine had the Factory exhaust on it. it was 2.25" ypipe to One huge CAT. This was under the Passenger seat. Then out in yPipe again 2.25" each to a Small Muffler that were really resonators that were located under the rear seats. Then over the axles together and around the leaf springs to the split tips. That was my factory exhaust on my 400 car. (My dad was original owner)
