Why do you think you need new shocks? (our cars don't have struts) what do want to do with the car, drag racing only, handling, or just cruising?
The banging could also be exhaust or torque arm that is loose.

Personally I would go with Koni SAs:

Do a search in the suspension forum, IMO the single best mod for our cars period. The difference is amazing (handling and ride quality), feels like a BMW.
If you don't want to spend that much you could look into KYB's (check same site linked) but because of how they adjust (they adjust compression and rebound at the same time) the ride quality will suffer.
Bilstiens are on national back order so they are out of the question, and drag shocks like QA1s or Strange etc. will leave you with a floaty, and jarring ride.
FWIW, If I were to buy another fbody, the very first thing I would do is throw on a set of Konis, its that much of a difference.

So what do we have then, coil over shocks? When I ordered some new stuff for my 3rd Gen, a new Strut Bearing was one of them, and I'm 90% sure that 3rd and 4th gen share the same shocks. I'm 100% on the rears being the same, but the fronts are a bit iffy.

So our cars do have struts or they don't we seem to have a conflict of opinion.....thanks for the info JD_AMG. Koni SAs $770, my uncle said new shocks would run $750 close enough...i think kybs are about 4 something according to the link but for this much money might as well go all the way for some good handleing

Well, I've always called them struts in the front of at least 3rd and 4th Gen F-Bodies. My truck, shocks, my Firebird, struts. Even looking up new ones for all 4 corners, NAPAs ProLink (if you have a commercial account with them) says Strut.

The 3rd gens had front struts because it took the place of the upper control arm.
4th gens are Shocks all around.
And I agree Koni S/A's dumdumdum
Single best mod done on my car since new.
