Default GTO - $5,000 in engine upgrades

Demonspeed will love the following.

I just read roughly 200 posts in the Tech section. I didn't want to post there, because obviously you sound like an idiot when you say what I'm about to say. If you had $5,000 to spend on engine upgrades, what and how would you do it? After researching, it sounds like 400+ rwhp is attainable with the following:

Heads, cam, cai, headers. Am I far off? Still would like to stay streetable (read no race gas, NOS, etc). Wouldn't mind hearing a lopey cam either. Car will be M6.

Fire when ready.

You can easily achieve over 400rwhp with head and cam upgrades.

450 should be easily attainable & VERY streetable.

Want to suggest any brands or specifics? I'm hearing/reading that the 5.3 heads with a port job and the G5X-2 / G5X-3 cam are a good mix. Anyone?

I'd just go with all the bolt ons and a cam. Longtubes, good catback, tb, lid (or in your case, a good cold air), pulleys, electric wp, maybe some rr's, a cam, and a good tune. I'm sure you could see 400 if you had it all set up just right. Maybe not quite, but at least pushing it.

The easy way out is nitrous.

Also, do you want to say you have 400rwhp, or you run 11's? With good suspension and driving technique, bolt ons will get you 11's.

I guess i'll also add that i'm personally going to do just what I mentioned above on my stock block and heads. All the bolt ons and a good tune, suspension, d/r's, and a good clutch... and that should keep me very happy until it's time to pull the motor for a complete rebuild. Then i'll be getting a set of heads and possibly the LSX intake. That's just me... I still have a lot to learn about the inside of the LS1, so my opinion may change a bit.

I'd do a TR220/114, 5.3 heads from the porter of your choice, LSX intake, Ported TB, and an LS1 Edit dyno tune from your tuner of choice and see what happens.

You would get a nice gain right there. Near 400 rwhp even through the stock exhaust manifolds, cats, and cat-back. Might even touch 400, if the LSX intake makes the wicked power that some of the early dyno tests are hinting at.

And you would be ready if & when someone comes out with a set of headers.

I wonder if a set of shorty headers meant for a Camaro would fit on a GTO? They just might.

We're working on installing heads & sleeper camshaft in my 04 GTO Monday When edit is ready to tune the gto camshafts will become a great option, but for now I will probably stay really small like the LS6 cam or our sleeper camshaft along with stage 1 patriots

Might as well post in the tech section, you'll get some great responses. If you dont mind a little lope and you dont have to worry about emissions then a TR 224 or equiv, stock heads with 918 springs and Titanium retainers, Long tube headers, and a good free flowing exhaust and a tune should net you 375 to 400. Go to a 230 and some aftermarket heads and you should be around 430 to 450. I think the TSP cam and LS6 heads looks like a great combo. I guess the question is if LT's have been designed for the GTO or not. If not you can always add them later.

Great advice guys. In line with what I've read. Didn't post in tech section because I don't think these threads really belong there. It's more of a "what if" or hypothetical deal. Don't want to waste the "expert's" time but I will gladly waste yours. LT's aren't developed, but I'm sure are in the works.

I dont believe your wasting anybodys time. As time goes by more and more GTO's will make their way onto the mod highway.

Are emissions a problem in your area?

Can't wait to see the results!

Regarding Edit, Carputing says they have it ready to go for 04 Holdens. I presume this also means holdens with pontiac badges on them http://www.carputing.com

DaleMX,

No issues with emissions in VA. Most truck owners in our area cut the cats off right out of the dealership and hang duals. Again, if I love the car after 6 months, I will mod it to at least 400 hp. It's sounds confirmed that the '05 GTO's get the 6 liter LS2 and 400 ponies. A little pissed that GM pulled the Z06 trick on us, oh well. If they raise the MSRP $5,000 for the LS2 then I guess we're even. I'll be watching that VERY closely.

I guess cars are allot like computers, they change so quickly. 400 hp should be easy when the LT's come out. By the time you decide to mod the AFR heads will be tested and I'm sure there will be lots of affordable H/C packages out there for 400+. Absolute, Patriot, and TEA are there already. When you go with a package get the cam that the head guys say works best with their heads, if they do the install you should get a guarantee and a decent warrantee.

George,

If my car was here I'd be in NJ in a heartbeat. I bought my Z's intake from Matt @ TT about a year ago. Aren't you guys fairly new? Just asking.

We have an outlet for GTO parts made by F1 performance F1 has brakes, short shifters, sequential gear boxes, 9" diffs, wheels, suspension, body kits, different dash, seats, etc, etc for the GTO. Let me know what bits you are interested in and I will get a picture and price for you.

Nate
