Gas guzzler tax???

Gas guzzler tax??? I just went to the Chicago Auto show and checked out the new GTO. I noticed on the automatic GTO's there is a charge for a gas guzzler tax and the manual 6 speed trans is a $625 option. Why would there be these charges?

Well, I suppose the 6-speed option cost is due to the cost of purchasing the tremec (sp) unit over producing the automatic. The gas guzzler tax is because they weren't able to get enough gas mileage with the automatic cars to avoid it, and GM decided to pass the government mandated cost to the consumer.
