Default Gto reliability

I'm currently looking at a 2004 Gto with 100k on the dial, it's a one owner Cosmo purple 6spd, I can't find anything wrong with it but ive never owned a Ls car, I've always owned mustangs, I wanna give n/a horsepower a try, anything I should look for on it in particular? How solid are the ls1s? The ls6 block?

Thanks
Clint

Can't take credit for the pic just something I found.

Check the BCM wires under the glove box for rubbing, suspension upgrades with a minimum of springs and strut mounts will likely be a good idea. With that many miles you may want to get a compression test done as well as you have no idea how hard those 100k miles have been. After you buy one check the FRCs for rubbing the fuel line and probably change all the fluids. LS engines are fairly reliable with general maintenance.

The fire issue can be fixed in 3 seconds, the bcm wire issue is a stupid easy fix aswell. Saggy rear spring fix is easily fixable with some $80 drag bags.

I have 70,000 on the clock and have not had a single issue with any of the above things.

Were is the car located? I hope not in Grand Junction Colorado lol

I would hesitate to throw a large cam with ported heads on it. I went with an Ms4 (one of the largest cams for a 346) at 101K miles, ported PRC heads, ported FAST, Vig 4000 converter, 410s, full exhuast etc... I put it back to stock at 116K miles and sold it. Still running perfect to this day.

I would consider an 05-06 since you have the option to go with an l92 top end, very budget friendly and make awesome power.

If an 04 is in your budget however you don't have much of a choice.

+1 on wheel hop..love the car though. These engines really seem to wake up with headers as I recently found, which is good because that is a reasonably inexpensive upgrade. Good luck.

High mileage LS1s are hit and miss. My friend cammed his LS1 at 120K, it still ran up until 170K when he sold it. Flipside I know several that broke within a week. That being said my motor and trans are forged and built so mine is reliable. Never missed a beat. I have some interior tearing, but nothinh else mentioned

Both of mine have the ripping seats and sagging headliner, I also removed the frc on both as well. As long as mainTenance is kept up, they are very reliable.

Every car is different, but I would have to say the LS1 is a very solid engine. This is my second time owning one, had one in a 99 Trans Am that ran great as well. For the most part as long as you change the oil routinely and done over rev it it, Ive seen them run for hundreds of thousands of miles. Also to answer your question, yes it is the LS6 block. I personally could not be more happy with my GTO.
