Exclamation Big Cam.. Little Knowledge..

Howdy, first question on here, just wanted to know what i need when doing a cam swap like stated above not really to much info on this area.. but anyways i wanted to do a cam swap on a 06 gto all stock besides some pacesetter longtubes, full exhaust, and intake. I was looking at those old Thunder racing Trex cam shafts and fell in love and seeing ls1-ls2 cams are pretty much interchangeable (besides going LS2 to Ls1) i wanted to know what i would need to basically run this cam.. im kind of on a slim budget just getting this car and school and all. any help is much appreciated

Cam Specs:Thunder racing Custom Camshaft

Duration@.050: Intake 244 ----Exhaust 250

Valve Lift w/1.7 rocker: Intake .610 Exhaust .615

Lobe Separation Angle: 109.51

How much do you know about that cam? The specs would not appear to make it much of a daily driver at all. I'd think you'd want gears and a FAST to take advantage of the upper level rpm power band this cam would bring. Many vendors offer a cam kit that comes with the hardware, springs, etc which match that particular cam. Before I worried about what I needed, I'd make sure I selected the right cam first. I suspect this ain't it.

Here's some good general cam advice:
If it's a street car don't get caught up in big dyno numbers. Average power across the board is what you'd ideally want. Nice flat torque curve, strong midrange and top end. Chose a donkey dick cam and not having the car properly matched with gears stall etc etc and you're gonna have a dog that gets spanked on the street.
lightweight stable valve train properly matched, and cam lobes are HUGE factors just past the cam specs themselves.

And fwiw here's the cam specs I had custom ground for my 408 ls3 240sx swap car.

239/247 .621"/.632" 114LSA +3 advance

little different since I was using small bore ls3 heads vs the ls6 style. Anyways..that car was to be driven every day including indiana winters. The goal was ultimate fun street car and that it was. Even for having a very modest sized cam in a 408 it spit out over 530rwhp and was just killer to be drive everyday.

You are not going to want to use that cam in a DD. sounds like your wanting a cam solely on the sound. Torqued v2/3 ms3/4's are pretty popular dd cams.

I had a 228r cam out in my 06 and a torqued v2 in my 04. My 05 has a 244/248 but it is not a dd.
