04 GTO worth it? I saw a listing about three hours from where I live, black car with just under 120k miles..Carfax says 2 accidents reported, which always makes me wonder. There is some light damage near the right headlights, but the car is pretty clean otherwise. Here's the kicker..they're only asking 4900, which seems entirely too good to be true. Most I've seen around here don't go for less than 7-8k..any thoughts on this? |
As a 2004 GTO owner, I would say pass. They are great cars if taken care of, but even in perfect condition they have a myriad of expensive quirks you must deal with. You are looking at buying a stupidly expensive timebomb. For the same money you could buy a much more luxurious money pit or an equally sporty fun car of the same era that won't need expensive maintenance. |
If you don't plan on redoing the car, that's going to be a hard pass. |
I was kind of thinking the same thing, seems too good to be true. I have nothing against high maintenance, coming from someone who owns an 06 Grand Prix gxp. Totally awesome car, minus the garbage transmission and electrical system lol. Though this would be a project, might be a little too much for me to handle. Only other car ive seen this cheap that I love was a 94 Nissan 300zx twin turbo..talk about high maintenance with them |
Price is good 2 accidents a bit of a worry. I would be looking for a ls6 6spd. |
that sounds like a potential parts-car or partout-then-make-the-roller-left-over-into-a-race-car type of material. you can get a decent, well maintained 04 for 8-10k, depending on how you bargain/hold out, what you can find, and what you're willing to deal with. |
depends on what your plans are. If your planning on modding it, skip the 04 and get an 05 or 06. I wish i would have. The brakes suck, the driveshaft is puny. the ecm setup in the 04 is garbage. theres lots of other things youd be missing out on. By the time i had to upgrade all the junk on my car that was lacking, I should have just gotten the 6 liter car. and then there that. 6 liter with 243 heads vs a 5.7 with junk heads. |
Less than 5k for a GTO is a steal even with the accident history assuming the car is still straight. Offer then 4-4500 and try and snag it on the cheap. |

I've been around them enough that I would purchase that car in a heartbeat if it was local for $4500. They're comfortable and perfect for DDing and for another ~$4k you could boost it and have less than $10k into a boosted LS1 that would run all day long. Even if you left it stock, it's still far more enjoyable than a Honda Accord (which I own btw :jest:) ) The higher mileage the motor, the better it is for boost as everything has loosened up. |

Have you owned one? I bought mine with the idea of upgrading everything, but if you buy one with any other ideas you will be disappointed. I planned on a turbo, so I intentionally bought the lower compression 5.7 instead of the 6.0 that had 50 more hp stock, since I cared nothing about stock. The 2004 model was going for a deep discount when the 2005s hit, so it made sense. Now that we are talking high mileage used car market, I don't see the value. |
Thanks for all the input guys..was gonna look at it this weekend but it already got picked up which is a shame. Would have grabbed it much quicker if it were an ls2. Yes there are some naysayers cause the ls2 had a few issues, but you can't deny the displacement and head advantage they have. Sucks that the only other GTO around here is listed at 13k for an 04, which seems absurd if you ask me. Guess I'll stick with the gxp for now and hope I don't blow the transmission up again:) |
