Default GTO VS F-Body?

So I can get a pretty good deal on an 04 GTO with about 3000 miles on it. What are the difference in performance between the GTOs and the F-Bodies? Are they any faster or any slower?

Here we go. The LS1 GTO is heavier and loses more power through the drivetrain mostly due to the IRS. But.. They are AMAZING cars to drive, the quality is above that of an F-body and can be made just as fast. Stock for stock the LS1 F-Body will win in the straight line..but..who stays stock? I'd take one over my car.

If you want a fast, good looking car with a lot of aftermarket support, get an F-body

If you want a fast, well put together, fun to drive car, get the GTO

I dunno, I like the looks of the F-Bodies more than I do of the GTOs. The GTOs look pretty lackluster to me and look too similar to a Grand Am.... Do they handle any better due to the IRS?

this sums it up.

yes my car is damn faster than every 04 gto ive encountered... but i would trade it in a second without hesitation.

(you left that out)

Read around and decide for yourself...

Me? It is the F-Body. More specific the 98+ Trans Am WS6. The GTO is just too boring in appearance and does not fit my personality. I tend to be aggressive and the center of attention so the WS6 fits.

The GTO... well you decide.

when i was looking for a different car last summer I wanted a 04 GTO, but I couldnt afford it at the time, so I got the Trans Am....The trans am looks so much better than the GTO, but i still like how they look and the GTO's are SOOO much better built. If i would have had the money there I would have taken the GTO in a heartbeat. They ride amazing, have an amazing interior, have an LS1 (although not quite as fast as an f-body due to wieght of car...but still a fast car in stock form) and they can be made to look very nice.

So what really shines about it to make you guys want one so bad? Just the build quality and interior?

That about covers it, and the IRS. Solid axle is nice for drag racing etc. but for daily driving it gets kinda old. Given they arent styled as radical as my car. The 05's with some nice wheels look amazing. Its juts a little more civilized brute than the TA.

If I was older and wanted a smoother riding car and didn't want the aggressive look I would go with the GTO. But instead I love the aggressive look and all the other aspects of the Trans Am and would never trade her for a GTO, but I would like to have that interior.

[IMO a GTO is more of a "Gentlemans hot rod" (definately not the in your face styling of a WS6) a very nice interior, styling that's easily overlooked by all but an enthusiast, it's decently quick, but it's held back by the weight of the car, and the power taken up by the IRS, it's in the end a refined, and polished vehicle
The WS6 on the other hand is an in your face, I'm going to rip your f**king head off brute of a car, fast unrefined and a product of what some would call primitave technology
To put it another way the GTO is a finely crafted rifle, the WS6 is a sawed off 12 gauge

I personally like my 12 gauge

You answered your own question. It's fairly obvious to me that you don't like the gto, so why get something you aren't going to be happy with if because people here said to. You don't like the way they look, so don't get something you will regret. I like the trans am's better as well. I wouldn't trade my car for a gto.

You guys all need to drive one first. That is really the only real way to figure out which one you like better. I drove a 2001 WS6 and the 04 GTO right after another and decided on the GTO. Power wise I couldn't tell the difference.

I have test driven a couple of GTO's and was fairly serious aboout buying one.

I ended up staying put with my 99' SS. The GTO is a sweet ride but not worth the cost. If you look deep you will find major paint issues, a tiny useless trunk, and stale looks.

If this car looked as sweet as it performed I would almost have one now.

There are just too many things about it that I could not live with.

Look over at ls1gto.com and search around.

Good Luck!!

im partial to the gto, cuz i have one, and i love it, love everything about it, i love the unassuming look and the big motor of all. So i can kind of compare the 2, my dad has an lt1 firehawk and the car is beautiful(one of the best looking f-body's in my mind), but i am very uncomfortable in the car, im 6 foot 2 and 250lbs. my knees crush the dash and i can barely start the car because my knee is in the way, so therefore the comfort level may "weigh" in on you or not...i was goin to get an ws-6 but there is no way for me to be comfortable for more than 15 min. just my 2 cents

In a heads-up drag, stock for stock, same tires, the F-body will win. On average, LS1 F-bodies are 400lbs lighter.

How is the GTO built better?

Do they handle any better due to the IRS?
IRS are known for being better on a race track, but the GTO's suspension isn't really set up for road racing or auto-x.

The WS6 on the other hand is an in your face, I'm going to rip your f**king head off brute of a car
haha, I love it.

In my case, I'd rather drive a car with poly bushings everywhere, stiff springs, and a solid rear. I could not care less about ride quality.

In the April Issue of Car and Driver, there is an article on the Twin Turbo S7. "Move the Sparco steering wheel just a millimeter, and the S7 responds immediately". Granted, an F-body is a far cry from a supercar, but it gives you a greater feel of the road.

Personally I went from this:

To this:

I'll stick to the GTO for sure. My '00 Trans Am was nice and mean looking, but the GTO is a much nicer car. Once I add FI (Procharger) to it, it'll be above and beyond the old STS Trans Am!

^ That GTO looks almost exactly like a guy I knows 04, except his has the rear bumper cover for the 05 too, and a 396 on spray, its amazing! Your car looks really good though! I need to test drive a goat just to drive one.
