drive shaft?

i've been reading that the drive shaft is the weak link in the goat's drive train, now has anyone had any problems with their drive shafts?

The only problem with the factory driveshaft is that the rubber couplers help contribute to wheelhop. I don't think anyone has actually broken one.

I have a Z28 and i've twisted 2 stock steel driveshafts on slicks at the track with an auto trans! Big stall tho. Don't know if the GTO has the same type driveshaft but i know the drivetrains are very similar. Ok I Know now the GTO has a 2 piece driveshaft didn't know earlier. Its prob weak tho if its two piece i would research converting it to a traditional one piece. If you break it ofcourse....

It technically IS the weak link. However, they can withstand quite a bit of power. That said, if you cannot control wheelhop it wil go....and go quickly.

BMR makes a couple of purpose built driveshafts. They completely aren't necessary unless you are making it into a one dimensional race car, laying down massive power, or just have your head up your ass and hop frequently. Besides, at the strip, a turn or two of the tires is the perfect launch....or so I have been taught. ;-)

Keep in mind, the two piece rubber isolated shaft takes alot of the shock out of the drivetrain. I'd rather twist a DS than have a halfshaft tear up the rear or blow the ring/pinion.

Oh, get a loop. This is GTO mandatory.

BMR is only selling off what they have left. The Driveshaft Shop makes to order. BTW, my company is a dealer for them if you need one. PM me for details.

With enough power, you will break something. Traction is the cheapest thing to break. If you go sticky tires, and start hooking up, the next weakest link will go- on the F-bodies in is usually the rear end, but many people have twisted their driveshafts, too.

There are many companies that make aftermarket high-perf driveshafts- some will even guarantee them for insane amounts of horsepower-

The Drive Shaft Is Not The Weak Link To My Gto It Has Been The 4l60e, The Bmr Sayes That The Weak Link Of Gto Is The Driveshaft... I Have Seen Gto's Make 800 Rwhp And Keep The Stock One With No Probs...

+1 I've only heard of 2 people breaking the stock shaft even at 600+ RWHP. You can't really compare it to the F-body shaft, they are totally different designs. I'm weary of 1 piece shafts, most vibrate at speed due to the pinion angle on the GTO

Speedyair7 11-01-2007 02:34 PM

It should be alright as long as you keep the wheel hop under control and like someone already said the BMR drive shaft is better for a purpose built car the one piece driveshaft for the GTO vibrates like a mofo
