Default Why do people block their license plates on craigslist ads

A lot of Craig's list vehicle ads have the license plates blocked in the pictures ...I know you all know what I'm talking about ......
The classic thumb blocking the plate in the picture or the piece of paper over the plate or even the black scribble from photo editing software

Why ???

Should I be doing this when I list vehicles on craigslist ...??

What am I missing out on ..??

I think most people just like remaining as anonymous as possible on the internet. They could be worried about any number of things. Unfortunately while vehicle registration records are supposed to be kept private, they aren't always.

Personally, when I take pics of a car to sell I remove the tags altogether. I also never put any personal info in any craigslist ads. No phone number or address. Too many annoying and crazy people out there.

Just a bunch of tinfoil hat people. You realize you drive around all day, everyday in public where everyone can see your plate number...

Remove the license from the picture. Add as contact only a throwaway eMailadress.
Protect your privacy.

My favorite is the above but with the added line of "can be seen in person at _________ address".

If that doesn't spell out, "I'll meet you at a van down by the river..."

Yep, by bluring it you get to decide who/when someone gets the info on the car. Its just one extra step of privacy.

It is the smarter move to remove or block out the plates but the whole finger thing is annoying. Don't be lazy. Just remove it or edit the picture.

Not just that, but anyone can take a picture of your car in a parking lot or on the road and then post it all over the internet if they want to, plate number and all. This happens all the time at car shows.

I think there is a bigger risk when posting your phone number, since that's direct contact information. A plate number still requires some research and effort to translate into useable information and, as mentioned above, people are going to see this number on the road every time you drive the car anyway.

Yep. Whenever I'm looking at cars on CL, I always have Jesse run a profile on the owner.

I wouldn't say thats 100% correct. I mean we all know some people either voluntarily expose more info or situationally do (job for instance). Not everyone has their info all over everywhere!

Thats how you sell a car though. I realize people can check email on their phone but If you list a phone number people are way more likely to text you these days befor email or calling. Selling stuff for years on craigslist I have never worried about the plate number or phone number. I think people think if the plate number is in the picture then they can look up your address from that and steal your car easier, like some gone in 60 seconds type ****. You need to type your phone number out differently to avoid spam calls, thats about it.

I have a guy flying in today to take my 92 stealth away, never 1 email and never 1 phone call. All texts.
