An update.
After buying and installing a 5.0 shifter along with doing the trick of using a washer on the detent ball the car shifts and works really smoothly.
The post who mentions doing the washer modification got his from some sort of plumbing application.
I made a trip to Lowe's with the detent ball in hand and found two different washers that fit properly.
One was 18 ga. and the other was 14 ga. and both were 3/4" ID x 1 1/8" OD
After some trial fitting and playing around with the feel I ended up going with a single 18 ga. washer.
According to the instructions with the new shifter the shift stop bolts are supposed to be threaded till they just touch the shift lever then backed off 1 full turn. Unless something goes really out of whack they should never come into play.
On a side note the guy who rebuilt the transmission said that the old factory shifter is a Hurst piece since the car was an SS.
Some day if I just get bored I might reinstall the old shifter to see how much of the poor feel was the shifter and how much was the washer on the detent ball modification.

Yeah, I left the center console off for part of the day when I installed my Pro 5.0. I think I put a dab of blue Loctite on the stop bolts, and then kept adjusting it until it stopped popping out of the gears. Haven't touched it since the day it was installed except indirectly for something like a tranny rebuild.
Haven't heard about the washer on the detent ball, do you have a link to the purpose behind that mod?
