Default What slicks do you like for road racing?

Just like it says. I'm on the last legs of a set of BFG KDs which have been quite nice, but I want a dedicated road course slick. So what do you like and why?

Thanks

Goodyear Sports Car Specials, 25x13x16, bias ply in 430 compound for road race, 210 compound for autoX. Can't beat 'em. You will need a set of 16x12 wheels to put them on. They will stick so much better than BFG KD's you will be shocked.

Hoosiers 275/40/17's
Yep. Got those. They stick like fly paper. Just make sure the track is clean with no pebbles on it as these tires will pick up every single one of them, throw them out in front of you and then you'll end up with a bazillion little rock chips in the front of your car like I have now. They're amazing on a track, stick wise though.

If using Hoosiers for road race, be sure to get the R3S05'S rather than the A3S05 or you will melt the tires. These are both DOT tires; if you can run a non-DOT slick, Hoosier makes a 25x12x16 that is the rough equivalent of the Goodyear slicks in my post above. Hoosier 275/40-17 will be the DOT version, which will not have as much grip as a real slick. The optimum tire size for a car the size of a fbody is bigger than that anyway; you want 315 to 335mm of tread with, or 12 to 13 inches.

Thanks guys. What about tire life with the Hoosiers? How many track days have you got with a set?

Goodyear G-19 slicks R480 compound. I run 25.5x11.5x18 front, 25.5x12.5x18 rear. You can find them used for ~$70/tire.

I also have a set of G-19's, 25.5x12x16 front and 27x13x16 rear. These are radials in R210 for AX. I think there is very little difference between these radials and the bias ply Goodyears. Perhaps the bias ply tires turn in a little better.

I ran Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires this year and for a "streetable" race tire they are good once they get some heat in them. I ran Toyo RA1's last year and liked being able to drive to the track on them.

For 2006 I'm going to run 285/30/18 Hoosiers. I've heard excellent things about them and they are also a very light tire.

I loved the R3S03's. To bad they changed the design and compund when they went to the R3S04. I also had good luck with te Michelin Cup Sport slick. They just have a couple little things you have to watch out for.

You can get them from John Berget with half to full rubber, anywhere from $40 to $90 a tire, mostly Goodyear's:
http://www.jbracingtires.net/

Also Ron Ver Mulm can set you up with the same, only his are more the Hoosiers:
http://rsracing.com/

I get mine from John Berget.

Either place can get them in 16, 17, and 18" wheel sizes, but you are best off with the 16's.

NataSS- I have (6) of the Hoosier RS303 GAC (Grand Am Cup) tires I bought at clearance $140 each. They have one steel belt in them I believe and reportedly last longer than the standard RS303's... who knows. I'm still experimenting with tires and getting my car dialed in.

After I waste this set I plan on running some takeoff slicks. I'm in a TimeTrial Unlimited class and can run whatever we want
