Also NAPA had the spacers as well or did you find a piece of pipe and cut to length? If so what was the length.

I now have a bench with 2 holes in it, and a small 1ton bottle jack, to shim both the input and counter shafts.
When doing the countershaft, the spacers keep the nuts off of the front case and the rear teeth, so the counter can "float" between the case races. Without the spacers, the nuts would hit the front case or skew between the countershaft "teeth".
When doing the extension shaft, the rod actually threads into the extension shaft and acts like a 'popcicle stick" The rod moves freely inside of the counter, but is threaded into the extension to allow it to "float" between the counter teeth and tailhousing bearing.
The nuts and spacers were all in the nuts&bolts area of NAPA also.
