Does the big rear wing on a Trans Am slow you down any in the 1/4? Do you need it?

I was thinking of removing it. My car is set up to run mid-9's. Do you need the wing for stability or anything? Has anyone removed it?

I know of a local tube-chassis fourth-gen Firebird that doesn't have one - he has a smaller, lighter, flat aluminum wing. And he runs 8's.

All the formula's have the low wing and i'm sure they can go just as fast as a Trans Am.

I took the high rise spoiler off my 93 TA and swapped on a formula hatch. The hatch pretty much raises itself now when you open it with a key. I would guess it's 20-25#'s lighter than the TA wing.

alot of the racers split the wing into its 2 sections and just use the upper part and support it in the back with something. joe overton has his rivited on and made some brackets out of flatbar to hold up the rear. im probably going in that direction soon.
