Default What Rear end does the GTO come with?

Is it stronger then an Fbody rear end? Im thinking i may want to buy one of these next year. The car is really growing on me. Saw a purple one today here in Biloxi Mississippi. Very refined. I think im getting older and this seems to fit the bill.

dana 3.46 gears. from what i've read the weak link may be the poly-donuts they use instead of u-jonts in the drive shafts. i haven't snapped mine yet.

C5 uses rubber donuts in the drive shaft also.

Diff & prop shafts are the same across the Holden range.

In the 'performance' models (Commodore SS Utility, Sedan, Wagon, SV8, Monaro & all Holden Special Vehicles - Holden's premium performance brand), they get the limited slip diff, however that is a very loose term & they become single spinners early in their life.....

A few guys here have broken them, but you do have to try. A popular choice is to replace the centre with a Kaaz, which seems to keep all but the angriest of heavily supercharged motors keep their diffs together.

A few have brokern prop shafts, but again - you really have to try.....

I just received an answer from a Torsen representative in response to my question about whether any of their diffs would fit our cars.

He said that the GTO has a Dana 44. Whatever that means.

Evidently, Torsen does not make a LSD that fits a Dana 44.

I think the DANA 44 is the same unit GM & Dodge used in the "84" thru "96" Vetts and "92" thru present Vipers!

VERY Interesting!!!

I am going to contact them again with this information and see what they say.

Heck they make one that fits the SSR!!! The GTO needs one far more than that whimpy SSR!!

Are you kidding? LS2 w/ 390 horses. That's far from whimpy in my book! Of course it does weigh an extra 1000 lbs, so maybe you're right. It has a lot of potential.

The C4 Dana 44 and Viper Dana 44 is a Super Dana 44. The pinion has to have a collar welded on it to accept regular Dana 44 Gears.

Is this a regular Dana or the same as the C4 and Viper? Either has plenty of gears out for it.

You are only 14 years late to the thread, the new style GTO is nothing but a re-badged Aussie crap car, does have a nice drive train but the rest of the car is crap, thus why it was only made for three years, Get you a real GTO, the real year GTO’s were made from 1964-1974

Every person likes what they like if he wants to get a new GTO go for it are they cheap to mod like an Fbody absolutely not. But I will say my GTO is way more comfortable to drive than my F body.

This is true I bought an 06 goat after my Camaro was totaled a couple years back I loved my f-body to death but the GTO is a much nicer ride.

He may have been late to the thread, but you are clearly just as ignorant now as you were 14 years ago.

I have a Torsen diff unit in my 2005 GTO. But...... I am running a Ford 8.8 diff. And had to modify the torsen posi to accept the IRS axle snap rings, by having a grove cut in the spider gears. Oh... the things we do! lol

Old thread but answering the original question for fun...
The Dana 44 is the same strength as a 8.8, Better gear selection, and you can put a True Trac in it instead of the thorsen if a gear drive locker is your thing..
The 44 is up there with the 9" for one of the longest produced axles.
Yukon gear/ Randy's have all the bits and pieces..

The Dana Axle setup manual is one of the best ever written.. IMHO,,,
