Default Finally have my 427 LSX built, have a question *and finally, 8 sec pass*

Going to start putting on the belt accessories, went out and bought a new water pump (ordered it for a 99 TA) and it seems to have clearance issues.

What water pump yall using? My LS1 pump hits the timing cover/bolts a little.

Very interesting I did not have this issue when I built my LSX. I purchased an AC Delco pump from Texas Speed.

I am also running the Moroso pan with the oil filter relocate kit now. The stock oil dipstick for my car was short and I found that a dipstick from a 4.3L 1500 Silverado is about the right length. Did have to clearance the windage tray in order to get my dipstick tube to clear though.

I tried my old one that was on the car originally (whatever brand that was) and it had the same issue.. The new one i bought from Oreillys is a murray, whatever brand that is, same issue.

Not sure if this was a known issue or just my issue, so that's why i am asking.. Thanks.

guess you cant put a LS1 water pump over a LS2 timing cover... guess those little notches make the difference.

The only problem I ran into was the chain on my double roller made contact with the cast aluminum mounting point for the cam sensor bracket. Just had to do a little grinding so the timing chain cover went on without making contact with the chain. No issues with the water pump making contact with the cover.

When I ran that combo, I remember grinding about half the head down on 3 of the bolts and it fit fine

Do you run the inner or outer belt position ?

The LS2 pump can work with the outer ( ie LS1 belt position ), but you need to pull the pulley off the shaft about 8mm and run it like that.

I run it in whatever the normal position would be... .Your saying an LS2 water pump wont line up with the crank pulley?

No, I'm saying there are 2 commonly used accessory belt positions.

Ignoring trucks, these are generally early/LS1/FBody etc types, or all Vette/later/Gen5 etc etc etc types. The early runs the belt 25mm further away from the engine vs the others.

So the large bell LS1 pump can accommodate both, the later small bell LS2 type pump only accommodates the inner belt location. But if you pull the bell off the shaft by about 8mm, it can be used for the earlier setup.

But you havent specified what accessory setup you intend to use to determine whether it will work without this adjustment or not, the only thing you mention is "99", so presumably it is an older setup running the outer belt position.

Basically like so.

Might require a few taps with a hammer too to help get it moving, but good steady pressure and it will move.

I might try and modify my crank pulley puller and see if i can make it work to pull the snout out.

I did find on ebay the right pump it looks like, GM doesnt make it anymore, must have been one of those crossover years when they switched stuff over.

Why not just grind down the bolts? Seems like an extremely simple fix....

thought about it, but if pulling the snout out a bit works it will save a bit of room of front being a bit shorter, not running AC anymore.
